The Cyanika border crossing between Uganda and Rwanda is the critical connection for visitors combining mountain gorilla trekking in both countries on a single East Africa circuit. The crossing is located on the road between Kisoro town in south-western Uganda (the nearest Ugandan town to the Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and an alternative base for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park's Nkuringo sector) and the Rwandan village of Cyanika, from where the road continues 10 kilometres south to Musanze town and then to the Volcanoes National Park Kinigi briefing centre.
The total driving distance from the Bwindi Buhoma sector in Uganda to the Volcanoes National Park Kinigi briefing centre via Kisoro and Cyanika is approximately 120 kilometres, taking 2.5 to 3.5 hours depending on road conditions on the Uganda side (the Kisoro approach from Bwindi is unsealed murram requiring a 4WD vehicle) and border crossing time.
