10-Day Kenya Self-Drive Safari Itinerary
This 10-day Kenya safari itinerary self-drive covers Kenya's northern and southern circuits in a single loop: Samburu National Reserve (the Special Five species found nowhere else in Kenya), the Laikipia Plateau (wild dog and rhino), Lake Nakuru (white and black rhino), and the Masai Mara (wildebeest migration July–October). The itinerary totals approximately 1,400 km and is designed for two people in a Land Cruiser V8 or Prado, camping inside each park. This is Kenya's best wildlife diversity circuit — it produces more species than any single-park visit.
The route
- Day1
Nairobi to Samburu
350 km6 hrsEarly departure — 5:30 am from Nairobi via Nyeri and the A2 north. The drive passes through Mount Kenya's highland forest and emerges into the semi-arid Samburu landscape by early afternoon. Enter through the main Samburu gate and drive directly to the Ewaso Nyiro River circuit. Afternoon sightings typically include reticulated giraffe and Grevy's zebra within the first 30 minutes.
Overnight: Samburu public campsite
- Day2
Samburu — Full Day
Full day in Samburu. Dawn circuit along the Ewaso Nyiro River — elephant herds, crocodile, and the best gerenuk sightings of the trip on the open bushland north of the river. The Samburu Special Five (Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich) are all typically recorded within 2 days of game driving. Afternoon circuit south into Buffalo Springs (adjacent reserve, same gate fee covers both).
- Day3
Samburu to Laikipia — Ol Pejeta
180 km3.5 hrsDepart Samburu by 7 am south via Isiolo and Nanyuki. Enter Ol Pejeta Conservancy via the main gate on the Nanyuki road. Afternoon circuit on Ol Pejeta's 200 km of internal tracks — rangers update wild dog pack locations daily.
- Conservancy fee: USD 90/person/day
- Key wildlife: black rhino (25+ individuals), white rhino, wild dog, cheetah
Overnight: Ol Pejeta public campsite
- Day4
Laikipia — Full Day
Full day at Ol Pejeta. Dawn wild dog activity is the priority — the Ol Pejeta pack hunts in the open grassland east of the main track at first light. Afternoon: northern white rhino enclosure (Najin and Fatu — the last two northern white rhinos on Earth). Late afternoon cheetah circuit on the open plains.
- Day5
Laikipia to Lake Nakuru
155 km2.5 hrsDepart Ol Pejeta via Nyahururu (Thomson's Falls viewpoint if time allows) and the C77 south to Nakuru. Arrive Lake Nakuru NP by noon via the Lanet gate. Afternoon rhino circuit — the southern sanctuary is the most reliable location for black rhino sightings in Kenya.
Overnight: Lake Nakuru campsite
- Day6
Lake Nakuru to Masai Mara
270 km4.5 hrsDepart by 7 am via Naivasha and Narok. Enter Masai Mara via the Sekenani gate by early afternoon. Afternoon game drive on the central plains.
Overnight: Sekenani campsite
- Day7–9
Masai Mara — Three Full Days
Three full days in the Mara gives time to cover the complete reserve: the Mara River crossings (July–October), Musiara Marsh, the Talek River circuit, and the less-visited Ol Kiombo area. Three days is the minimum recommended for the Masai Mara on a thorough self-drive — it takes 2 days to learn the reserve's geography and 3 days to consistently find predator concentrations.
- Park entry: USD 80/person/day
- Key wildlife: lion, cheetah, leopard, wildebeest river crossings (July–Oct), hyena
- Day10
Masai Mara to Nairobi
260 km4 hrsDawn game drive (6–9 am) then depart the Mara via the Sekenani gate by 9:30 am. Drive north via Narok to Nairobi — arrive by 2 pm using the Southern Bypass.
