The drive from Arusha to the Serengeti’s Naabi Hill Gate via the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is one of the great overland approaches in Africa. The 215-kilometre route from Lodoare Gate (NCA entry) to Naabi Hill Gate (Serengeti entry) crosses the Ngorongoro crater rim, passes the world-famous Olduvai Gorge, and descends through the Ngorongoro highlands to the Serengeti’s southern plains. In good conditions, the full drive from Arusha to the Serengeti takes 5.5 to 7 hours including a stop at the Karatu fuel station and the scenic pace that the route demands. The route also passes the entry point for the Ngorongoro Crater descent — most visitors stopping for one night on the rim do so here. This guide covers the complete driving sequence.
Arusha to Makuyuni Junction: 80km, 1 Hour
Arusha is the base for northern Tanzania’s safari circuit. Fill fuel completely in Arusha before departure — the next reliable fuel is Karatu (95km from Arusha). Depart Arusha on the A104 highway southwest toward Dodoma. At the Makuyuni junction (80km from Arusha), turn south toward Mto wa Mbu and the Rift Valley escarpment. The junction is clearly signposted. Usa River (15km from Arusha) has a TotalEnergies station on the main road — a good backup top-up point if you didn’t fill in Arusha.
Makuyuni to Mto wa Mbu: 15km, 20 Minutes, Escarpment Descent
From Makuyuni junction, the road drops 600 metres down the Rift Valley escarpment in a series of switchbacks. Lake Manyara National Park’s boundary fence parallels the road on the right — the fig forest canopy is visible below the escarpment. Mto wa Mbu (literally “the river of mosquitoes”) is at the base of the escarpment, a busy and colourful market town. Fill fuel here if needed — this is the last town fuel before Karatu (37km further). Mto wa Mbu is also notable as the starting point for Lake Manyara National Park — if Manyara is on your itinerary, the park gate is 5km south of town.
Mto wa Mbu to Karatu: 37km, 45 Minutes, The Escarpment Ascent
From Mto wa Mbu, the road climbs 600 metres back up the eastern wall of the Rift Valley to the highland plateau at Karatu. The ascent road through the Mbulu highlands passes through cultivated terraces and mixed forest — the temperature drops noticeably as altitude increases. Karatu town is at 1,400 metres — the last fuel stop before the NCA and the Serengeti. Fill fuel completely at Karatu. There is no fuel at Lodoare Gate, no fuel at the Ngorongoro rim, no fuel at Naabi Hill Gate, and no fuel inside the Serengeti central zone (Seronera). From Karatu’s fuel station to the next diesel available after the Serengeti circuit is approximately 215km one-way (to the Serengeti exit back via Naabi Hill and return to Karatu). A full tank from Karatu is essential — do not enter the NCA with less than a full tank.
Karatu to Lodoare Gate (NCA Entry): 15km, 20 Minutes
From Karatu, drive southwest 15km to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority’s Lodoare Gate. Pay NCAA entry fees at the gate: USD 70 per person per 24 hours for the NCA transit (this covers all time inside the NCA including the rim and the drive to Naabi Hill — it does not include the additional Serengeti TANAPA fee). Vehicle entry: USD 40 per vehicle per day. The gate rangers register your vehicle, number of passengers, and entry time. Retain the receipt for inspection at the Serengeti’s Naabi Hill Gate.
Lodoare Gate to Ngorongoro Rim: 25km, 40 Minutes
From Lodoare, the road climbs through montane forest toward the crater rim at 2,300 metres. The forest zone is cool (bring a fleece for the rim stop), biodiverse, and a productive birding section — look for Hartlaub’s turaco in the fig trees, various sunbirds, and the black-and-white colobus monkey in the forest edge. The first view of the Ngorongoro Crater from the rim viewpoint is usually at the Crater View Point approximately 5km before the Ngorongoro Crater Lodge junction. This viewpoint — the first reveal of the complete caldera panorama — is one of the great landscape moments in East Africa travel.
Ngorongoro Rim to Olduvai Gorge: 50km, 50 Minutes
From the rim, the road descends the western side of the Ngorongoro highlands through the NCA’s open highland savannah — Maasai cattle and donkeys are visible on the plateau, and the NCA’s conservancy system (where Maasai pastoralism and wildlife coexist) is visible in its working landscape. At 50km from the rim, a signpost points to the Olduvai Gorge Museum (Oldupai Gorge, to use the correct Maasai spelling). The gorge is one of the world’s most important palaeontological sites — fossils of Homo habilis and Homo erectus were discovered here by Louis and Mary Leakey. A museum visit adds 1 hour to the drive but provides significant historical context. Entry approximately USD 30 per adult.
Olduvai to Naabi Hill Gate (Serengeti Entry): 45km, 45 Minutes
From the Olduvai turn-off, the road continues west through the shortgrass plains of the NCA’s western zone — a landscape that feels like the Serengeti’s opening act. Wildebeest and zebra are often visible on this section in migration season (November to May when the southern herds are on these plains). Naabi Hill is a distinctive isolated granite kopje visible from a distance — the gate is at its base. Pay TANAPA Serengeti entry fees at Naabi Hill: USD 82 per person per 24 hours plus USD 40 vehicle fee. Present the NCA entry receipt from Lodoare. The total transit time from Arusha to Naabi Hill Gate is 5.5 to 7 hours — plan accordingly and target a morning or early-afternoon arrival to leave time for the first Serengeti game drive.
