Standard 4×4 Without Pop-Top (NOT for TANAPA Parks)
Some Arusha operators rent standard Land Cruiser Prados or Hilux vehicles without pop-top roofs at lower daily rates (USD 100 to 130). These vehicles cannot enter TANAPA national parks for game drives. They are appropriate for Arusha National Park hiking access, Kilimanjaro gate approach roads, and non-park overland driving. If you are quoted a Tanzania rate below USD 130 per day for a full northern circuit including Serengeti and Ngorongoro, ask specifically whether the vehicle has a pop-up roof — it almost certainly does not, which means the low rate is not applicable to the parks on your itinerary.
Dar es Salaam: Southern Circuit Base

Arusha to Dar by road is approximately 650km (8 to 9 hours via Dodoma or via Chalinze). Most operators permit one-way hire for a fee (USD 200 to 400 depending on vehicle type and operator policy). A one-way circuit from Arusha, through the northern parks, south to Ruaha and Nyerere, and ending in Dar with one-way vehicle drop-off is an ambitious but very rewarding 14 to 16 day Tanzania self-drive.

Booking Lead Time for Tanzania
Tanzania’s pop-top vehicle fleet is smaller than Kenya’s general hire market. In peak safari season (July to October for the northern circuit migration), pop-top Land Cruisers from quality operators book out 3 to 4 months in advance. Book your Tanzania 4×4 as soon as your gorilla permits or Ngorongoro descent permits are confirmed — the vehicle hire is the enabling platform for the entire circuit and should be confirmed before the flight booking is finalised.
A 4×4 is essential for circuits that include the Ngorongoro Crater descent (which requires centre differential lock), the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest approach road in wet season, or Kidepo Valley National Park. For circuits that stay on sealed national highways and well-maintained murram roads in dry season a capable 2WD can manage — but the Toyota Land Cruiser V8 GX with full 4WD and diff lock is always the safest and most reliable choice for any East Africa self-drive circuit.
You need a valid driving licence (plus an International Driving Permit if your licence is not in English), the COMESA Yellow Card insurance certificate, a cross-border authority letter from the vehicle owner for each transit country, and the vehicle registration document.
