Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda’s northwest is the gateway to mountain gorilla trekking in Rwanda and one of the world’s most famous wildlife destinations. The park protects the Virunga volcano chain — eight volcanoes straddling the borders of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo — and the mountain forest that covers their slopes from 2,400 metres to the summit zones above 4,500 metres. For self-drive visitors based in Kigali, Volcanoes is a 110-kilometre drive on the RN1 highway north to Musanze — a straightforward 1.5-hour drive on tarmac that puts one of Africa’s most extraordinary wildlife experiences within comfortable reach of Rwanda’s capital. This guide covers the road, the logistics, and the activities in Volcanoes National Park for 2027/2028.
Kigali to Musanze: 110km, 1.5 Hours on the RN1
From central Kigali, take the RN1 highway north. The road climbs immediately from Kigali’s elevated position (1,567 metres) through the Rulindo highlands and the tea plantation landscape of the Northern Province. The drive is entirely on tarmac in good condition — Rwanda’s road infrastructure is among the best maintained in East Africa. The volcanoes first become visible as you approach Musanze from the south — the cone of Karisimbi (4,507 metres, Rwanda’s highest peak) and the distinctive profile of Bisoke are visible above the cultivated highland on clear mornings. Musanze town (also known by its former name, Ruhengeri) is the main service centre for the Volcanoes area. Fill fuel at Musanze — TotalEnergies and Rubis stations are on the main road. The park headquarters at Kinigi is 15km north of Musanze on a smaller tarmac road.
Musanze to Kinigi: The Last 15km
From Musanze, drive north on the road to Kinigi. This road passes through one of Africa’s most dramatic landscapes — the heavily cultivated lower slopes of the Virunga volcanoes, with small farms working right up to the park boundary at 2,400 metres. The park boundary is clearly marked and the transition from cultivated terraces to forest edge is abrupt. The RDB headquarters at Kinigi includes the visitor reception, the gorilla trek briefing rooms, a souvenir shop, and the ranger station. This is where all gorilla trekking and golden monkey tracking begins each morning.
Activities in Volcanoes National Park
Mountain Gorilla Trekking (USD 1,500 per person)
The primary activity and the reason most visitors come to Volcanoes. Twelve gorilla families are habituated for trekking in the Rwanda sector of the Virunga. Groups of maximum 8 visitors per family per day. Trek duration 1 to 5 hours from the Kinigi trailheads. One hour maximum with the gorillas on location. See the Rwanda Gorilla Permit guide for full details. Briefing at 7:00am, start trekking from 7:30am.
Golden Monkey Tracking (USD 100 per person)
Golden monkeys (Cercopithecus kandti) are endemic to the Virunga volcano chain — they live only in the bamboo forest zone of the Virunga, nowhere else on Earth. Two habituated golden monkey troops are available for tracking in Volcanoes National Park. The golden monkey trek departs at the same time as the gorilla briefing (7:00am) but is significantly shorter and easier — the golden monkey troops are typically located in the bamboo zone within 30 to 45 minutes of the trailhead. The monkeys are small, fast-moving, and spectacularly coloured — a brilliant gold-orange back on a black body, active and inquisitive. The tracking experience is excellent value at USD 100 per person and can be combined with a gorilla trek on the same day (gorilla morning, golden monkey afternoon — book in advance with RDB as afternoon golden monkey slots have limited availability).
Volcano Hiking
Several volcanoes are open for hiking on day permits or with overnight arrangements. Bisoke (3,711m, the most popular day hike, 6 to 8 hours return) has a crater lake at the summit — the Bisoke crater lake is one of Rwanda’s most dramatic highland landscapes. Karisimbi (4,507m, Rwanda’s highest peak, 2-day hike with overnight camping) requires an overnight permit and guide. All volcano hikes are booked through RDB at Kinigi headquarters and require guide accompaniment — individual hiking without a guide is not permitted. The Bisoke hike can be combined with a gorilla trek day only for very fit visitors who can complete the gorilla trek in the morning and begin Bisoke mid-afternoon.
