The Nairobi to Tsavo self-drive on the A109 Mombasa highway is one of East Africa’s most visually dramatic approaches to a national park — the descent from the Kenyan highlands through the Tsavo escarpment, passing the famous David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant nursery (at Voi), and arriving at Tsavo East’s main gate after 330km and 4 hours of tarmac. The A109 Mombasa highway is dual carriageway from Nairobi to Athi River and good single tarmac for most of the remaining distance — one of Kenya’s best-maintained long-distance roads. Understanding the specific junction points, the essential Mtito Andei fuel stop, and the gate decisions for either Tsavo East or Tsavo West makes the Nairobi to Tsavo self-drive a straightforward first-day Kenya circuit leg.

Nairobi to Tsavo Self-Drive: The A109 Route

Nairobi to Mlolongo (30km)

Depart Nairobi southbound on the A109 (toward Mombasa). The first 15km to the Mlolongo interchange is dual carriageway — heavy truck traffic is common in this section as the A109 is Kenya’s main Mombasa freight corridor. Continue south through Athi River industrial town (50km) and the Salgaa junction (Machakos turnoff, 55km). The A109 continues southeast after Athi River through Kyumvi junction toward the Nairobi-Mombasa midpoint.

Mtito Andei Fuel Stop (230km, 2.5 to 3 hours)

Mtito Andei is the midpoint town on the A109 between Nairobi and Mombasa — the essential fuel stop for the Nairobi to Tsavo self-drive to either gate. Fill the tank completely at Mtito Andei. The town is also the junction for Tsavo West (Mtito Andei gate is 2km west off the A109, signposted). A30-minute stop at Mtito Andei covers fuel and the gate decision: if continuing to Tsavo West, turn west here. If proceeding to Tsavo East (Voi gate), continue south on the A109 for another 100km.

Voi and Tsavo East Gate (330km, 4 hours)

Voi town (330km from Nairobi) is on the edge of Tsavo East National Park — the Voi gate is clearly signposted 3km from the Voi town A109 junction, heading northeast on a murram spur. Voi has fuel stations (top up here if missed at Mtito Andei), a supermarket, and the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Voi Reintegration Unit (rescued elephant orphans — viewing from outside is free). The Tsavo East Voi gate is the most commonly used Nairobi to Tsavo self-drive gate.

Tsavo East Voi Gate to Aruba Dam: The First Afternoon Circuit

On arrival at the Voi gate after the Nairobi to Tsavo self-drive, the most productive afternoon game drive sequence (if arriving by 2pm for a 2.5-hour circuit before the gate’s 6:30pm close):

  • Voi gate entrance (collect trail map from gate ranger)
  • Aruba Dam (15km from gate on the Galana River circuit) — hippo pod, buffalo, and the red-dusted Tsavo elephant visible at the water
  • Kanderi Swamp (8km from gate, southern circuit) — open marshland with waterbirds and grazing elephant
  • Return to gate via the Voi main road by 6pm

Tsavo East Entry (2027/2028)

  • Adult entry: USD 52 per person per day (KWS Tsavo East rate — lower than Masai Mara)
  • Vehicle entry: USD 40 per vehicle
  • Public campsite (Voi gate area): USD 25 per person per night
