The Serengeti is 14,763 km2 of nationally protected ecosystem — larger than many European countries — and the decision about which Serengeti zone to focus your self-drive circuit on is the most consequential planning choice for a Tanzania safari. The Serengeti north vs south comparison is not simply about distance from Arusha or campsite availability: the northern Serengeti (Kogatende, Lamai Wedge) and the southern Serengeti (Ndutu, Lake Masek, Gol Mountains) have entirely different seasonal wildlife rhythms driven by the wildebeest migration’s annual movement pattern, and a visitor who drives to the wrong zone for their travel month will miss the defining experience of that area entirely. This guide explains what each Serengeti zone delivers, when each zone is at its best, the specific self-drive logistics of reaching and camping in each area, and which zone is the best choice for your travel dates and priorities.

The Migration’s Annual Cycle: What Drives the North-South Choice

Understanding the Serengeti self-drive zone decision requires understanding what drives the wildebeest migration’s annual movement. Approximately 1.5 million wildebeest follow a broadly circular annual route through the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem, moving clockwise across the ecosystem following rainfall and fresh grazing. The migration is not a single event — it is a year-round movement whose dramatic spectacle moments (calving, river crossings) occur at different locations in different months. The seasonal pattern in broad terms: calving on the short-grass plains in the south and south-east (Ndutu area, Gol Mountains, Lake Ndutu) from January to March; northward movement through the central Serengeti and Seronera Valley from April to June; western corridor Grumeti River crossings from May to June; northern Serengeti and Mara River crossings from July to October; return south from October to December as the short rains bring new grass to the southern plains. This annual cycle means the wildebeest concentration is in the south in January to March, the north in July to October, and the central zone in April to June — and choosing which Serengeti zone to visit should be driven primarily by this schedule.

Northern Serengeti (Kogatende and Lamai Wedge): July to October

The northern Serengeti is the Mara River crossing zone — the most visually dramatic single wildlife event on the Africa circuit. The Mara River enters the northern Serengeti from the Masai Mara ecosystem to the north and flows westward through the Kogatende area before exiting through the Lobo corridor. From late July to early October, the wildebeest herds follow the river downstream in both directions, congregating at the known crossing points (Sand River crossing, Lookout Hill crossing, Kogatende main crossing) in their thousands before gathering the collective momentum to launch into the river. The Nile crocodiles (adults of 4 to 5 metres) have learned to position at these crossing points — the predator-prey drama at the river is the defining image of the Serengeti in popular media. In peak August and early September, multiple crossings occur daily. The wait at the river is never guaranteed — the herds may build up and turn back multiple times before committing — but the build-up itself (the dust, the noise of 50,000 animals gathering, the tension of the hesitation at the bank) is its own extraordinary spectacle that begins before the crossing event itself.

Self-drive logistics for the northern Serengeti: the Kogatende area is 120 km north of Seronera on the northern circuit track, approximately 3 to 4 hours of driving including wildlife stops. There is a dedicated TANAPA campsite in the Kogatende area (book via the TANAPA portal months in advance for July to September as it fills completely). A 3-day northern Serengeti circuit from Seronera gives 2 full days at the river before returning south. Fuel planning: the last reliable fuel is at Seronera visitor centre — carry a 20-litre jerry can for the northern circuit. The Kogatende track passes through excellent general wildlife habitat (lion, elephant, giraffe, cheetah) even before reaching the river, making the drive north itself a productive game drive rather than a transit.

Southern Serengeti and Ndutu (January to March): Calving Season

The southern Serengeti short-grass plains around Ndutu, Lake Masek, and the Gol Mountain foothills are the wildebeest calving ground — the most ecologically intense and visually dramatic period in the Serengeti’s annual cycle. Approximately 500,000 wildebeest calves are born in a 6-week window centred on January, at a rate of 8,000 calves per day at the January peak. The evolutionary logic is synchronised calving for predator saturation — so many calves are born simultaneously that the lion, cheetah, wild dog, and hyena populations cannot consume them all, and the calves that survive their first 48 hours (when vulnerability is highest) quickly develop the leg speed to outrun most predators. The predator response to this abundance is the highest predator activity density in the Serengeti. Cheetah are most visible on the Ndutu open plains in January and February, hunting the newborn calves on the short grass where their speed advantage is maximised. Lion prides from across the southern Serengeti converge on the calving zone, establishing overlapping territories on the plains. Wild dog packs follow the calving herds. Spotted hyena clans reach their annual peak of social activity around the whelping dens in January as the females are also producing pups — the Ndutu hyena den network is one of the most accessible in the Serengeti. A self-drive visit to the Ndutu area in late January to mid-February is arguably the Serengeti’s most intense wildlife experience per hour of game drive time.

Note on jurisdiction: the Ndutu area is technically within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCAA) rather than Serengeti National Park — book the Ndutu campsite and pay the NCAA entry fee (separate from the TANAPA Serengeti fee) through the NCAA authority rather than the TANAPA portal. Many self-drive visitors miss this distinction and arrive at Ndutu without the correct pre-payment.

Central Serengeti (Seronera): The Year-Round Option

The Seronera Valley in the central Serengeti is the most consistently productive zone regardless of migration timing. The Seronera River’s permanent water, the kopje rock outcrops, the riverine woodland, and the open grassland create a habitat mosaic that supports a resident predator community independent of the wildebeest migration’s presence. The Seronera lion population (80 to 100 individuals across 9 to 12 prides) is Africa’s most studied and individually identified large cat community — specific named individuals and prides are reliably located by the informal information network among resident lodge guides and rangers. The Seronera fig tree corridor is the Serengeti’s highest-probability single location for leopard — the resident leopard rest in the horizontal branches of large Ficus trees along the river bank and can be located with binoculars in the early morning and late afternoon. Cheetah use the open plains east of the Seronera Valley year-round, and the kopje outcrops (isolated granite rock formations on the open plain) are the preferred cheetah territorial marking sites — any kopje with a cheetah silhouette on the highest point produces a photographic encounter that the open plain grass makes impossible to frame in the same way.

Which Zone Should You Choose?

July to October travel dates: prioritise northern Serengeti (Kogatende) for the Mara River crossing, with 1 to 2 days at Seronera on the way north or south. January to March dates: prioritise the Ndutu and southern short-grass plains for the calving predator concentration, with optional Seronera days for the resident predator circuit. April to June dates: Seronera is the best zone for this period (the western corridor Grumeti River also productive in May to June for a secondary migration crossing) — avoid the northern Serengeti secondary tracks which are wet. For visitors with one week in the Serengeti regardless of month: base at Seronera for 4 days and include a 3-day extension to either the north or south depending on the month. If the migration timing is irrelevant and the goal is the best possible self-drive predator encounter on a single Seronera circuit: any month from June to October or December to February at Seronera delivers exceptional lion, leopard, and cheetah encounters without the long drive to Kogatende.
