Permit Booking: The Critical Preparation Step

Three activity permits need to be booked before any other circuit planning can proceed. Book all permits through Rwanda Development Board at rdb.rw. The sequence and advance booking required:

Mountain gorilla trek permit (USD 1,500 per person): The most scarce and most expensive permit in the circuit. Book as far in advance as possible — 3 to 6 months for June to September peak season, 4 to 8 weeks minimum for other periods. Select a date in Day 2 or Day 3 of the itinerary to allow a full arrival day in Musanze before the trek morning. The permit is valid for a single family assignment on the specific date chosen — it cannot be rescheduled without rebooking and reissuing through RDB. Payment is by credit card on the RDB website.

Golden monkey trek permit (USD 100 per person): Also at Kinigi briefing centre but a separate activity from the gorilla trek. Book 2 to 4 weeks ahead for most dates, or immediately if the available dates are limited for your travel window. Schedule this for Day 3 or Day 4, the day after the gorilla trek, so you use the same Kinigi base without additional driving. The golden monkey and gorilla treks use the same 7 am briefing start but go to different groups — do not schedule them on the same morning.

Nyungwe chimpanzee standard tracking (USD 250 per person): Book 2 to 4 weeks ahead. Schedule for Day 5 or Day 6 in Nyungwe. Day-by-Day 7-Day Rwanda Primate Circuit

Day 1 — Kigali arrival, drive to Musanze (89 km north on A1, 1.5 hours): Collect hire vehicle at Kigali International Airport or hire company office. Drive north on Rwanda’s excellent A1 highway to Musanze. The A1 is sealed dual carriageway to Kigali’s outskirts then single-lane tarmac in good condition through the Gicumbi hills. The Virunga volcanic chain appears on the northern horizon 40 km before Musanze. Check into accommodation in Musanze town or in the Kinigi buffer zone (13 km from the briefing centre — preferred for the short pre-dawn drive on trek morning). Prepare kit for the gorilla trek: waterproof hiking boots, gaiters, rain jacket, garden gloves (for the nettles at Bwindi — also present in the Virunga vegetation), trekking poles if available, 1.5 litres of water, snack, camera. Day 2 — Mountain Gorilla Trek at Volcanoes NP: Rise 4:30 am. Depart by 5 am for 7 am Kinigi briefing. The 7 am briefing is mandatory and punctual — late arrivals forfeit the permit. to the gorilla family: 45 minutes to 4 hours depending on where the family chose to nest the previous night. One hour of observation with the family — most visitors describe this as the most affecting wildlife encounter of their lives. Return to the trailhead. Back to accommodation by 2 to 4 pm. Afternoon: rest. Overnight Musanze or Kinigi.

Day 3 — Golden Monkey Trek at Volcanoes NP, then transition day: Rise 5:30 am for 7 am golden monkey briefing at Kinigi (same briefing centre, different trailhead from the gorilla trek). The golden monkey troop (40 to 80 individuals in the habituated group) is found in the Virunga’s bamboo zone at lower altitude than the gorilla families — trek duration typically 1 to 2 hours to reach the troop. The golden monkey’s vivid orange and black colouring and fast, energetic movement through the bamboo create an encounter that contrasts completely with the gorilla encounter’s meditative quality. Day 4 — Drive Musanze to Nyungwe Forest (220 km south on B7, 3.5 hours): Depart Musanze by 8 am. Drive south on the B7 through Muhanga, Ruhango, and Huye (Butare). Optional stop at the Rwanda National Museum in Huye (1 hour — Rwanda’s main ethnographic and cultural collection, with a particularly good section on traditional crafts and kingship). Continue west on the B7 through the Nyamagabe tea district and then the dramatic Nyungwe Forest escarpment road that descends to the forest edge above Lake Kivu. Return to Uwinka by noon. Day 6 — Drive Nyungwe to Akagera (380 km via Kigali, 5.5 hours): Depart Uwinka by 7 am. Dawn bird walk from Uwinka before departure (1 hour, for the Nyungwe’s specialised montane forest birds: Ruwenzori turaco, grauer’s rush warbler, Albertine owlet). Drive east via Huye and Kigali (205 km, 3 hours). Kigali lunch and fuel stop (Kigali Genocide Memorial if 2 hours available). Continue east on the B9 through Kayonza to Akagera Kinyinya gate (167 km east of Kigali, 2.5 hours).
