Kenya eTA Application Guide for Self-Drive Safari Visitors

The Kenya Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) is now mandatory for all foreign nationals entering Kenya, and understanding the Kenya eTA application process correctly is the first administrative step for every self-drive safari visitor planning a Kenya circuit. Since January 2024, Kenya replaced both the previous e-Visa system and the visa-on-arrival facility with the eTA — meaning that nationalities which previously arrived without any pre-arrangement (including many European, North American, and Commonwealth nationalities that had visa-free access under the old system) must now apply online before travel. A Kenya eTA application completed correctly takes under 30 minutes, costs USD 30, and is typically approved within 24 to 72 hours. An application with errors in the name, date, or document quality fails and requires re-submission — a problem if the error is discovered within 5 days of departure.

Who Needs the Kenya eTA and Who Is Exempt

The Kenya eTA requirement applies to all foreign nationals as of January 2024, with the exception of East African Community (EAC) member state nationals travelling on EAC travel documents. For self-drive safari visitors, the practical scope is: all non-East African nationals — EU, UK, US, Canadian, Australian, and all other non-EAC passport holders — require the eTA. The 90-day prior visa-exemption arrangements that existed for EU and UK passport holders under the previous Kenya visitor regime were abolished at the January 2024 transition to the eTA system. Do not assume your previous visa-free access to Kenya applies — check the current requirements at the official portal etakenya.go.ke before any Kenya circuit planning. Citizens of the EAC member states (Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo with the appropriate EAC documentation) have separate entry facilitation and should consult their national immigration authority for the current bilateral arrangement with Kenya.

Kenya eTA Cost, Validity, and Entry Conditions

The Kenya eTA fee is USD 30 per applicant, payable by international credit or debit card through the eTA portal. The fee is non-refundable regardless of the application outcome. An approved Kenya eTA is valid for 90 days from the date of issue (not from the date of entry) and grants a single-entry stay of up to 90 days in Kenya. The total permitted stay in Kenya on a single eTA is 90 days — most self-drive safari visitors use 7 to 21 days of the permitted 90-day stay. Multiple-entry variants are not available through the standard eTA portal — if the circuit requires re-entering Kenya (for example, entering Kenya from Uganda, crossing to Tanzania via the Namanga border, and returning to Kenya for a Nairobi departure), each separate Kenya entry requires its own approved eTA or a border endorsement. Confirm the current multi-entry arrangements at the Kenya eTA portal before planning any circuit with multiple Kenya entries.

Required Documents for the eTA Application

Prepare the following before opening the application. All document uploads must be under 2 MB in file size and in JPEG or PDF format:

Passport biographical page scan: Colour scan of the data page of your passport, minimum 300 DPI. Passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure from Kenya. This is the most important document — any text illegibility in the scan or passport validity below 6 months causes rejection. Do not use a photograph of the passport page taken in poor light — use a flatbed scanner or a good-light overhead photograph with all four corners of the page visible.

Digital passport photograph: White background, full face visible, no glasses, taken within the last 6 months. Minimum 400 x 400 pixels in JPEG format. A smartphone photograph taken against a white wall in daylight meets this requirement if the image is sharp and the background is uncluttered.

Travel itinerary: Evidence of your Kenya visit plan. For self-drive visitors with confirmed accommodation bookings (campsites, lodges): the booking confirmation documents. For self-drive visitors without pre-booked accommodation: a letter from the vehicle hire company confirming the hire period and a brief circuit description (parks to be visited, approximate route and dates). The itinerary document does not need to be a fully committed booking — a planned circuit description on company letterhead is accepted.

Return or onward travel proof: A return flight booking out of Kenya, or documentation of a planned border crossing to Tanzania or Uganda with a specific date. Self-drive circuit visitors who enter by air and exit by road into Tanzania at Namanga can use the Tanzania border crossing date as onward travel evidence — provide the planned crossing date in the travel itinerary.

Yellow fever vaccination certificate: Required for visitors arriving from or transiting through yellow fever endemic countries. Uganda is classified as a yellow fever endemic country by the Kenya immigration authorities — therefore all visitors who have been in Uganda within 6 days before Kenya entry must present the yellow fever vaccination certificate. The vaccination provides lifetime protection and the certificate is issued once. Carry the original certificate (not a photocopy) for presentation at the Kenya border gate or airport health desk.

Step-by-Step eTA Application Process

Navigate to etakenya.go.ke — the official Kenya eTA portal. Do not use any third-party website claiming to process Kenya eTAs on your behalf. Third-party intermediary sites charge additional service fees (often USD 30 to USD 80 above the official USD 30 eTA cost) and sometimes delay processing by introducing an additional manual step. The official portal processes applications directly. Create an account using your email address. A verification email arrives within minutes — verify the email before proceeding with the application. Begin a new application. Enter your personal details in the sequence the form requests: surname, given names, date of birth, nationality, passport number, passport expiry date — enter every field exactly as printed in the passport. Any discrepancy (middle name included in one field but not another, date in wrong format) causes rejection. Upload documents in the sequence the form requests. Confirm the uploads visually in the portal before proceeding. Enter travel details: intended arrival date, port of entry (select Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for Nairobi flights, or the specific land border gate for Uganda or Tanzania road arrivals). Pay the USD 30 fee by card. Submit. An automated acknowledgement email arrives with a reference number. Log back into the portal to track status. Approved eTAs are available as a downloadable PDF in the portal account and by email. Print the approved eTA and carry the printed copy — some Kenya border gates request the physical document even if the QR code is scanned from a phone screen.

Processing Time and Common Errors

Standard processing: 24 to 72 hours for most applications. Peak period processing (December to January and June to August): up to 5 to 7 business days. Apply at minimum 2 weeks before travel. Common reasons for rejection: name mismatch between the application and the passport (extra spaces, different middle name spelling); passport photograph not meeting the white background or size specifications; document upload file size exceeding 2 MB; credit card payment declined (contact your bank to authorise foreign government transactions if the card fails). If the application is rejected, re-submit correcting the specific reason stated in the rejection email — re-submission is free within the same application reference for the first 14 days after the original submission.

Land Border Entry with a Self-Drive Hire Vehicle

Self-drive visitors crossing from Uganda at Busia or Malaba, or from Tanzania at Namanga or Taveta, present the approved eTA at the Kenya immigration desk alongside the standard vehicle documentation: hire agreement, vehicle registration certificate, and the Carnet de Passage or temporary import permit if the vehicle is being temporarily imported into Kenya. Most reputable Kenya-based hire companies provide a letter confirming the hire and temporary import authorisation that satisfies the Kenya border vehicle documentation requirement. Confirm with the hire company what vehicle documents they provide for cross-border circuits before departure.
