Akagera National Park self-drive is Rwanda’s savannah wildlife experience — the 1,122 square kilometre park in eastern Rwanda’s Kagera district is the only place in Rwanda where a self-drive game drive circuit through open savannah grassland, woodland, and lakes is possible. Akagera National Park’s self-drive circuit is compact enough to cover the main highlights in 2 to 3 days, and the park’s Big Five presence (elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, and black rhino — reintroduced in 2017) makes Akagera the only Rwanda park where the savannah Big Five game drive is available. This guide provides the complete Akagera National Park self-drive plan for 2027/2028 visitors.

Akagera Self-Drive Circuit: The Main Loop

  • Main south gate to Akagera lodge area (north): 65km on the main circuit track running north through the savannah and lakeside habitats. This is the primary Akagera game drive axis.
  • Lake Ihema circuit: The western shore of Lake Ihema (Rwanda’s largest lake) provides the best hippo and crocodile viewing. The track runs close to the lakeside for 20km of the main circuit.
  • North Akagera: The northern third of the park (above Mutumba Hill) has lower visitor density and is the area where lion and rhino are most frequently encountered. The north gate is used for entry/exit to northern Rwanda circuit.

Big Five Status in Akagera (2027)

  • Elephant: Large elephant herds regularly seen on the main circuit, particularly around Lake Shakani (south) and the northern acacia woodland. High sighting frequency.
  • Buffalo: Common on the main circuit — large buffalo herds in the savannah areas near the lakes.
  • Lion: Two prides reintroduced in 2015 — established breeding population in the northern sector. Lion sightings require the northern circuit (above Mutumba Hill).
  • Rhino (Black): 30+ black rhino present (2027) in the northern sector. RDB rangers can advise on current rhino locations at the gate — the self-drive visitor can access rhino areas but ranger-guided rhino tracking is also available as an add-on activity.
  • Leopard: Present in lower densities in the riverine and rocky areas — the least commonly seen of the Akagera Big Five.

Lake Ihema Boat Trip

The Lake Ihema boat launch is the most-booked activity in Akagera — the 2-hour hippo-and-crocodile boat tour on Lake Ihema provides a water-level perspective on the hundreds of hippo that inhabit the lake. Boat trip cost (2027): approximately USD 35 to 45 per person. Book at the Akagera Activities Centre at the main gate — morning (6:30am) and afternoon (3pm) departures. The morning boat trip is consistently excellent for bird photography on the lake.
