Rwanda’s compact geography makes a 7-day self-drive circuit covering all three national parks genuinely achievable without any driving day exceeding 4 hours. This itinerary visits Volcanoes National Park (gorilla trekking and golden monkeys), Akagera (Big Five game drives and boat trip), and Nyungwe Forest (chimpanzees and canopy walkway) — the full Rwanda national park experience in a single week.

Day 1: Arrive Kigali — Vehicle Collection and City Orientation

Collect your vehicle from the rental company in Kigali. If your flight arrives midday or earlier, visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial (2–3 hours, allows you to begin processing Rwanda’s history before driving into the countryside). Overnight in Kigali — the Mille Collines Hotel, Ubumwe Grande, or any of the city’s well-regarded hotels depending on budget. Fill the vehicle with fuel before leaving the city.

Day 2: Kigali to Volcanoes National Park (2.5 hours)

Depart Kigali by 8am on the RN1 north. Arrive Musanze by 10:30am. Stop for supplies in Musanze (last supermarket before the park). Continue to Kinigi (park headquarters, 15 km west of Musanze). Afternoon: golden monkey trekking (USD $100, book through RDB in advance). The golden monkey trek departs 7am — it may be possible to do it on a same-day afternoon session if your gorilla trek permit is for Day 3. Check with RDB at Kinigi on arrival. Overnight at your chosen lodge near Kinigi.

Day 3: Gorilla Trekking at Volcanoes NP

Report to Kinigi briefing at 7am. Group assignment, briefing, departure. Trek duration 1–5 hours depending on gorilla family location. 60 minutes with the family. Return to lodge by early afternoon. The gorilla encounter is the centrepiece of the Rwanda circuit — 60 minutes that typically produces photographs and memories that define the entire trip. Afternoon rest, forest walk, or optional Dian Fossey hike (requires advance booking). Overnight Kinigi/Musanze area.

Day 4: Volcanoes to Akagera National Park (3.5 hours via Kigali)

Depart Musanze by 8am. Drive east to Kigali (2 hours), stop for fuel and lunch in the city, then continue northeast to Akagera National Park (100 km, 2 hours). The total driving time via Kigali is approximately 3.5 hours. Arrive Akagera by 2pm. Afternoon game drive on the Lake Ihema circuit — expect hippo, crocodile, elephant, buffalo, and giraffe. Overnight at Ruzizi Tented Lodge or Magashi Camp depending on budget.

Day 5: Full Day at Akagera National Park

Dawn game drive (6am departure) on the Mutumba Hills circuit for lion and rhino. Return for breakfast. Mid-morning: boat trip on Lake Ihema (USD $35 per person, 7am or 9am departure). Afternoon game drive on the northern plains for elephant and giraffe herds. Overnight Akagera.

Day 6: Akagera to Nyungwe Forest (4 hours)

Depart Akagera by 7am. Drive southwest to Kigali (2 hours), then south to Nyungwe (2 hours). The RN1 through the Nyungwe forest is beautiful — the road cuts through dense montane forest with colobus monkeys crossing overhead. Check in at your accommodation near the Uwinka visitor centre. Afternoon guided trail walk in the forest (no chimp permit required — forest trails can be walked with a guide for approximately USD $30).

Day 7: Nyungwe Chimpanzee Trek + Canopy Walkway + Return to Kigali

5am chimpanzee tracking departure (pre-booked, USD $150). Return by 10–11am. Late morning: Nyungwe canopy walkway (USD $50, 2 hours). Depart Nyungwe by 2pm for the 3.5-hour return drive to Kigali. Arrive Kigali by 6pm. Return vehicle and overnight in Kigali for an early morning flight, or drive directly to the airport.
