The hike to the top of Murchison Falls — the point where the Nile is compressed through a seven-metre-wide rock gap before plunging 43 metres — is one of Uganda’s most accessible and dramatic walks. It requires no permit, no guide, and no technical ability. You park at the car park on the south bank, walk a clearly marked trail for 45 minutes to the top of the gorge, and watch the entire force of the world’s longest river disappear through a crack in the rock. The combination of this hike with the boat trip from Paraa (which views the falls from the base) gives you the complete Murchison Falls experience — above and below.
How to Get to the Trailhead
The car park for the Murchison Falls hike is on the south bank of the Nile. From Paraa (north bank): cross on the UWA ferry to the south bank. Drive east along the south bank road for approximately 12 km to the falls car park. From the Masindi approach (arriving from the south): enter on the south bank road and the car park is approximately 30 km from the Kichumbanyobo gate.
The car park has a small UWA information shelter — confirm your park entry receipt is current before starting the walk. No additional hiking fee beyond the park entry.
The Hike
The trail from the car park to the top of the falls is approximately 1.5 km — a 45-minute walk on a well-marked path above the gorge. The trail runs along the rim of the Murchison Gorge — the slot canyon cut by the Nile through the granite bedrock. Views of the gorge intensify as you approach the falls. Do not walk beyond the marked viewpoints — the rock is wet and slippery at the gorge edge, and falls into the gorge are fatal. The designated viewpoint at the top is safe with a railing. Stand at the rail and watch the Nile’s enormous volume accelerate into a seven-metre gap — the violence and noise of the compression is extraordinary at close range.
Wildlife on the trail: crocodiles and hippos are visible in the Nile from the gorge rim. African fish eagles, yellow-billed kites, and various raptors circle the thermals above the gorge. The vegetation along the trail edge is excellent for primates — olive baboons are common.
Combining with the Boat Trip
The optimal Murchison Falls experience: take the morning boat trip from Paraa (9am departure, 1.5 hours, USD $30 per person) to the base of the falls, watching wildlife from the water en route and viewing the falls from below. Then cross back on the ferry to the south bank, drive to the car park, and walk to the top of the falls (afternoon, 45 minutes) — viewing the same falls from above. The contrast between the view from the boat (spray, rainbows, the roar of the plunge pool) and the view from the top (the 7-metre gap, the acceleration of the water, the gorge stretching away below) is remarkable.
