The East Africa dry season self-drive window from June to October is the prime period for wildlife viewing and road access across all four main safari countries — Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda — for reasons that directly benefit the self-drive visitor: park tracks that are impassable in the wet season are firm and navigable; wildlife concentrates at permanent water points (rivers, swamps, and remaining waterholes) rather than dispersed across the full park area, making game drive efficiency significantly higher; and the dry season coincides with the two most dramatic annual wildlife events in East Africa, the wildebeest migration river crossings at the Mara River (July to October) and the Tarangire dry season elephant concentration (July to October). This guide covers the East Africa dry season self-drive advantages by park and month for 2027/2028.
Dry Season Wildlife Advantages by Park
- Masai Mara (July to October): The wildebeest migration peaks — 1.5 million wildebeest cross the Mara River in waves throughout August and September. Lion prides gather at the crossing points. Cheetah follow the wildebeest herds. Even without a crossing on any specific day, the open plains carry the densest wildlife concentrations in East Africa.
- Serengeti (July to October, northern Kogatende sector): The wildebeest are in the northern Serengeti during the same months as the Mara crossings — the Kogatende sector is the Tanzania equivalent of the Mara River crossings. Fewer vehicles than the Kenya side of the migration.
- Tarangire (July to October): 2,500+ elephants concentrate around the Tarangire River as dry season water availability drives all elephants in the greater Tarangire ecosystem toward the river. The largest dry season elephant concentration in Tanzania.
- Murchison Falls (June to August, Uganda dry season): The north bank murram tracks are at their best condition. The Albert Nile waterfront concentrates hippo, crocodile, and elephant in the dry season.
- Queen Elizabeth NP (June to August): The Kazinga Channel — connecting Lake Edward and Lake George — concentrates hippo, buffalo, and elephant on the banks. Boat trips produce the most wildlife sightings of any season.
Dry Season Track Conditions
- Most park tracks are at their firmest — all 4×4 routes are passable without exceptional off-road skill
- The Serengeti northern sector and the Kidepo approach road (Uganda) are at their best condition in July to September
- Dust is the main dry season challenge — windows closed on dusty tracks, lens filter on camera at all times
