Five days is the minimum practical duration for a Uganda gorilla trekking self-drive from Kampala. It is tight but achievable if you plan the driving schedule correctly, have your gorilla permit confirmed in advance, and are comfortable with 5-hour driving days. This itinerary prioritises the gorilla experience and adds Queen Elizabeth National Park as a wildlife complement — the two most important stops for a short Uganda visit.

The 5-Day Route: Kampala → Queen Elizabeth → Bwindi → Kampala

Day 1: Kampala to Queen Elizabeth National Park (305 km, ~5 hours)

Depart Kampala by 5:30am via the Masaka highway. Arrive Mweya by noon. Afternoon game drive on the Kasenyi Plains: Lions, Uganda kob, elephant, and warthog. Overnight Mweya or nearby lodge. Book the 2pm Kazinga Channel boat trip if you arrive early enough — it is worth USD $30 for 90 minutes of hippos at arm’s length.

Day 2: Queen Elizabeth + Drive to Bwindi (190 km, ~4 hours)

Early morning Kasenyi game circuit (6:30–9am). Depart Queen Elizabeth by 10am via the Ishasha sector for the optional tree-climbing lion detour (adds 1 hour). Continue south and east through Kihihi to Bwindi Buhoma — arrive by 2–3pm. Afternoon walk on the Buhoma forest edge trail (no permit required, approximately 2 hours with a community guide, USD $10). Overnight near Buhoma.

Day 3: Gorilla Trekking at Bwindi

Report to UWA briefing at 7:30am. Trek duration 1–6 hours depending on gorilla family location. 60 minutes with the gorilla family. Return to lodge by early-mid afternoon. Rest, recover, and review photographs. Afternoon walk in Bwindi village or community market. Overnight Buhoma.

Day 4: Bwindi to Fort Portal to Kampala (520 km, ~7.5 hours)

This is the long day. Depart Bwindi by 7am. Drive north via Kihihi and the scenic B23 to Fort Portal — approximately 4 hours. Optional Kibale Forest stop for a 90-minute primates walk (not the full chimpanzee trekking experience but worthwhile if you have time — USD $30 guided walk). Continue east from Fort Portal to Kampala (4 hours). Arrive Kampala by 7–8pm. This day is 7.5 hours of driving — realistic in a Land Cruiser if you depart on time and keep stops brief.

Day 5: Kampala / Departure

Return vehicle in the morning. Final day for Kampala exploration or onward travel. Most international flights depart Entebbe in the late evening — a full day in Kampala or Entebbe for Mabamba Bay shoebill viewing (40 km from Entebbe, 2–3 hours by canoe, USD $25) makes excellent use of this final day.

Is 5 Days Enough?

Five days is enough for the gorilla experience and a meaningful introduction to Uganda’s wildlife. It is not enough for chimpanzee trekking at Kibale, Murchison Falls, or Kidepo Valley — those require more time. But if the gorilla permit is your primary objective and you have limited holiday time, five days is achievable with a 5am departure on Day 1 and an acceptance that Day 4 involves a long drive.

The 7-day itinerary (which adds chimp trekking and more wildlife time) is a significantly better use of your time and not dramatically more expensive. But for the visitor who has only 5 days, this circuit delivers Uganda’s most iconic experience without compromise on the gorilla day itself.
