Mobile data coverage in Uganda’s national parks ranges from intermittent to completely absent. Streaming Google Maps in the Kidepo Valley, the Bwindi forest, or the remote sections of Murchison Falls is not a reliable navigation strategy. Having the right offline maps downloaded before you leave Kampala is one of the most practical things you can do to make your Uganda self-drive comfortable and stress-free. This guide covers what works, what doesn’t, and what to download.

Maps.me: The Best Offline App for Uganda Park Tracks

Maps.me uses OpenStreetMap data, which for Uganda includes a remarkably detailed record of national park track networks — more detailed than Google Maps for off-road routes. The Kasenyi Plains circuit at Queen Elizabeth, the Murchison Falls north bank tracks, and the Kidepo Valley Narus circuit are all mapped on Maps.me with enough detail for navigation.

Download: Open Maps.me, go to the download section, select Uganda. The Uganda country file is approximately 200 MB. Download this file completely while on WiFi in your Kampala accommodation before departing. You can also download neighbouring countries (Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania) if your itinerary includes cross-border travel.

Limitations: Maps.me is less accurate for recently built roads and some park tracks may not reflect current conditions (a track that appears as a main road on the map may be overgrown). It does not give live traffic information or current road conditions. Use it for navigation, not for assessing current road quality.

Google Maps Offline: Best for Highways and Towns

Google Maps offline mode covers Uganda’s tarmac highway network extremely well. The Kampala–Masaka–Mbarara, Kampala–Fort Portal, and Kampala–Gulu highways are mapped in detail with accurate distances and timing. The limitation is park track coverage — Google’s offline data for Uganda’s park interiors is patchy.

Download: Open Google Maps, search for each region you plan to drive (e.g. “Western Uganda”), and use the offline maps download function. Downloads expire after 30 days — if your trip is longer than a month, re-download before they expire. Download multiple regions separately: Kampala area, Western Uganda (Fort Portal/Queen Elizabeth), Northern Uganda (Murchison/Gulu/Kidepo), Eastern Uganda (Mbale/Sipi).

iOverlander: Community Park Track Data

iOverlander is a community-sourced overlanding app with user-submitted GPS waypoints, campsite locations, fuel stations, water sources, and route notes from other self-drive travellers. For Uganda, it has useful location pins for UWA campsites, community water points, and notes on specific track conditions contributed by recent travellers. Less useful for navigation than Maps.me but invaluable for practical logistics data (does this campsite have a pit latrine? Is this river crossing currently passable?).

Garmin GPS Devices: Still Worth Considering

A dedicated Garmin GPS unit with the East Africa map cards (Garmin City Navigator Africa NT or Tracks4Africa) provides the most reliable off-road navigation, independent of phone battery and signal. If you are doing Kidepo Valley or an extended circuit without reliable power, a Garmin handheld (Oregon 750t or similar) with fresh batteries as backup is worth carrying. Car Hire 4×4 Drive includes a GPS unit as optional equipment with some vehicle packages — ask when booking.

What to Download Before Leaving Kampala: Checklist

  • Maps.me: Uganda country file (full download)
  • Google Maps offline: Western Uganda region, Northern Uganda region (if going to Murchison/Kidepo)
  • Google Maps offline: your specific departure and destination cities
  • Download satellite/hybrid map mode if available — terrain mode helps identify park track geography
  • Screenshot key route segments while on WiFi for offline reference
  • Note gate GPS coordinates for each park on your itinerary: Katunguru gate (QE), Paraa ferry (Murchison), Buhoma gate (Bwindi), Kanyanchu gate (Kibale), Apoka gate (Kidepo)

Car Hire 4×4 Drive provides a pre-departure route briefing and printed park maps for each national park on your itinerary. Contact us for vehicle rental and navigation support planning.
