A 7-day Uganda self-drive safari circuit connecting Kampala with Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth National Park, and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is the country’s classic itinerary — covering the major wildlife parks, a gorilla trek, and the western Uganda highlands in a single coherent loop. This is a demanding self-drive route (total driving distance approximately 1,600 km with significant sections on murram roads), but the wildlife rewards are exceptional: game drives with lion and elephant at Murchison, chimpanzee tracking or game drives at Queen Elizabeth, and mountain gorilla trekking at Bwindi, all in one week. This guide provides the full day-by-day itinerary with distances, overnight stops, estimated costs, and practical notes for 2025.

Day 1: Kampala to Murchison Falls (300 km, 5 hours)

Depart Kampala at 06:00 on the A109 north (Gulu Road). Stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary at 08:30 (175 km from Kampala) for the 1-hour guided white rhino walk (USD $35 per person) — a morning well spent before continuing. Depart Ziwa by 10:30, continue to Masindi for fuel and lunch (30 minutes). Continue to Murchison Falls NP Masindi Gate (230 km from Kampala) by early afternoon. Cross the Nile at Paraa ferry (operates on demand, waiting time 10–30 minutes, UGX 10,000 per vehicle). Check in to northern bank accommodation (Paraa Safari Lodge, Nile Safari Camp, or budget at Paraa Rest Camp). Afternoon: short game drive in the northern sector. Evening: sunset by the Nile.

Day 2: Murchison Falls – Full Day

Dawn game drive (06:00–09:30): northern sector game drive — open savanna with giraffe (Nubian, the tallest giraffe sub-species, found only in Murchison among Uganda parks), elephant, buffalo, Uganda kob, and if conditions favour: lion sightings on the open plain north of the Nile. Return to camp for breakfast. Morning: UWA Nile boat trip (10:00 departure from Paraa jetty, 1.5 hours upstream to the Falls, USD $30 per person). The boat trip is essential — crocodile, hippo, and the Falls itself at the journey’s end are the Murchison highlights. Return to Paraa by 12:00. Afternoon: drive to the top of the Falls viewpoint (south of Paraa, short walk from the car park) — viewing the Nile forcing through the 7-metre gap from above. Late afternoon second game drive (16:00–18:30). Park fees: USD $40 per adult per day.

Day 3: Murchison to Queen Elizabeth (380 km, 6 hours)

Early departure from Paraa (06:30) for the long transit day. Cross the Nile on the Paraa ferry, exit Masindi Gate, and drive south through Fort Portal (255 km from Paraa, 4 hours) — the “gateway to the west” with good fuel and a lunch stop at a Fort Portal town restaurant. Continue south on the A109 from Fort Portal through Kasese (53 km, 45 minutes) to Queen Elizabeth NP Katunguru Gate (50 km further, 45 minutes). Arrive at accommodation in the Mweya area by 16:00. Mweya Peninsula provides the most centralised base for Queen Elizabeth — the Uganda Wildlife Authority HQ, the Mweya Safari Lodge and bandas, and access to the Kazinga Channel are all on the peninsula.

Day 4: Queen Elizabeth National Park

Dawn game drive in the Kasenyi Plains area (north of the Kazinga Channel) — the most productive big-cat area of Queen Elizabeth NP, with the large resident lion prides that have become legendary for tree-climbing behaviour (the Ishasha sector’s tree-climbing lions are on Day 4 afternoon). Kasenyi at dawn: early morning lion sightings, elephant at the salt-lick waterholes, and the Uganda kob rutting arena (leks — the male territorial competition displays of the kob are one of Uganda’s most remarkable behavioural wildlife spectacles). Morning: Kazinga Channel boat trip (UWA-operated, 08:00 and 14:00 departures, USD $30 per person, 2.5 hours) — hippo, buffalo, elephant, and an extraordinary bird list along the 32-km channel that connects Lake George and Lake Edward. Afternoon: drive to Ishasha sector (55 km south) for the tree-climbing lion — the Ishasha fig trees are the specific area, ask the Ishasha ranger for current tree positions. Park fees: USD $40 per adult per day.

Day 5: Queen Elizabeth to Bwindi (180 km, 4 hours)

Depart Ishasha sector at 07:00. The route from Ishasha to Bwindi (Rushaga sector) follows the B23 road through the community corridor between the two parks — 65 km of partially murram road through Kihambira and Kigezi highlands. 4×4 required (the B23 has sections of steep murram especially after rain). Arrive Rushaga sector by 11:00. Afternoon: explore the local community area, coffee farm visit, or rest in preparation for the gorilla trek. Check in to Rushaga sector accommodation. Evening briefing at the UWA Rushaga visitor centre (groups are assigned to specific gorilla families the evening before the trek).

Day 6: Bwindi Gorilla Trek

Register at Rushaga visitor centre at 07:30. Trek briefing at 08:00. Gorilla trek with UWA ranger guide (trek duration: 1–5 hours depending on family position). One hour with the mountain gorilla family (permit: USD $800 per person). Return to visitor centre by early-to-mid afternoon. Afternoon: community experience, or rest and recovery if the trek was physically demanding. Celebratory dinner at lodge — the gorilla trek day is typically the emotional highlight of the Uganda circuit.

Day 7: Bwindi to Kampala (510 km, 8–9 hours)

Early departure (06:00) from Bwindi for the long return drive. Route: Kisoro to Kabale (56 km tarmac), Kabale to Mbarara (100 km tarmac), Mbarara to Kampala (267 km tarmac). Total: 423 km on tarmac from Kabale — good road quality all the way. Arrive Kampala by 16:00–17:00. Budget for Day 7: fuel (approximately 50 litres, UGX 180,000), a lunch stop in Mbarara or Masaka.
