Tsavo National Park safari self-drive — Kenya’s largest protected area at 22,000 km², split into Tsavo East and Tsavo West on either side of the Nairobi–Mombasa highway — is Kenya’s most underrated safari destination: a wilderness park where an entire week of driving produces solitary game drive encounters, no radio-network sharing of sighting coordinates, and the unique visual of Tsavo’s red-dusted elephant herds (the volcanic red laterite soil stains the elephants’ grey skin orange-red) moving across open bush plains. The Tsavo safari self-drive suits the experienced East Africa visitor who has already done the Masai Mara and Amboseli and wants Kenya’s least crowded, most remote safari experience. This guide covers the Tsavo safari self-drive for 2027/2028.

Tsavo East vs Tsavo West: The Self-Drive Choice

  • Tsavo East: Open semi-arid savannah — better for open-country species (elephant herds, lion, cheetah on the Yatta Plateau, Mudanda Rock elephant congregation in the dry season). The Galana River is the key wildlife magnet — game drives along the Galana produce the highest wildlife density in Tsavo East.
  • Tsavo West: More varied terrain including the Chyulu Hills, Mzima Springs (hippo and crystal-clear underwater viewing cave), and volcanic kopjes. More dense vegetation makes spotting harder but the variety of habitats is higher. Black rhino are present in Tsavo West’s Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary.
  • Combine both: The Tsavo gate on the Nairobi–Mombasa highway separates east and west — it is possible to drive through from one side to the other as a transit route, making a Nairobi to Mombasa safari road trip a viable self-drive circuit.

Tsavo Safari Logistics

  • Distance from Nairobi: 330 km to Mtito Andei gate (Tsavo East), 5 hours via the A109 Mombasa highway
  • Park entry: USD 52/person/day (Tsavo East) / USD 52 (Tsavo West)
  • Best timing: June–October dry season (Galana River concentration)
  • Campsite: Tsavo East public campsite (basic, self-contained needed)
