Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park has four gorilla trekking sectors, each with its own access road, gorilla family allocations, UWA briefing station, accommodation options, and trek difficulty profile. For self-drive visitors, the choice of sector has a direct impact on the driving distance from the previous night’s accommodation, the road quality on the approach, and the trek conditions on the day. Permits are issued specific to a sector (and sometimes to a specific gorilla family) — your sector choice is made at the time of permit booking and cannot be changed without cancellation and rebooking. This guide compares all four sectors for 2027/2028 to help you make the right booking decision for your self-drive itinerary.
Buhoma Sector (Northern Bwindi)
Buhoma is the original and most established gorilla trekking sector in Bwindi — gorilla habituation here began in the late 1980s, and Buhoma has the longest-habituated families and the most developed tourism infrastructure. The sector has 4 to 5 gorilla families available for trekking. Accessibility: Buhoma is reached from Kabale (90km, 2.5 to 3 hours on a road that is good tarmac to Butogota and then murram for the last 15km). UWA briefing: 7:30am at the Buhoma visitor centre. Trek difficulty: varies — some families range on the forest edge (shorter, easier trek) while others move deeper into the forest interior (longer, steeper trek). Accommodation: Buhoma Community Rest Camp (budget, approximately USD 40 to 60 per person), Mahogany Springs Lodge (luxury, USD 350 to 500 per person), Buhoma Lodge (mid-range, USD 150 to 250 per person).
Ruhija Sector (Eastern Bwindi)
Ruhija is the smallest and least-visited of Bwindi’s four sectors, accessible from the east via Kabale-Ruhija road (approximately 25km from Kabale town on a road that is partially murram and can be difficult after rain). The sector has 2 gorilla families available for trekking. The Ruhija area is at higher elevation than Buhoma or Rushaga — the forest here is montane with different vegetation and a colder climate. Trek difficulty: the Ruhija families range on steep terrain and the treks are considered among the most physically demanding in Bwindi. Accommodation options in Ruhija are limited — Ruhija Community Campsite (basic) and Gorilla Mist Camp (mid-range). Ruhija suits birders alongside gorilla trekkers — the sector has exceptional Albertine Rift endemic birdlife including African green broadbill and handsome francolin.
Rushaga Sector (Southern Bwindi)
Rushaga is the largest sector by number of gorilla families — 5 to 6 families are available for regular gorilla trekking, plus the exclusive Gorilla Habituation Experience (GHEX) available at Rushaga only. The GHEX allows 4 visitors (maximum) to spend a full day with a gorilla family still in the process of full habituation — a USD 1,500 per person experience that differs from the standard one-hour visit. Rushaga is accessible from Kabale (approximately 80km, 2.5 hours via the Rubanda road). The road to Rushaga is better maintained than some other sector approaches. Accommodation: Rushaga Gorilla Camp (mid-range, USD 120 to 200 per person), Gorilla Agro Tourism Camp (budget-mid), and the luxury Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge (USD 400 to 600 per person) overlooking the valley above Rushaga. This sector is popular with visitors combining Bwindi with Rwanda gorilla trekking via the Katuna border crossing (Rushaga is the Bwindi sector closest to the Rwanda border).
Nkuringo Sector (Southwest Bwindi)
Nkuringo is the most remote of Bwindi’s four sectors — accessible from the west via the Kisoro road rather than from Kabale. From Kabale, Nkuringo is approximately 100km (2.5 to 3.5 hours via Rubanda and Kihiihi). From Kisoro town (35km), the access is shorter but the road from Kisoro to Nkuringo (30km) is very steep and rough — one of the most challenging access roads to any Uganda park sector. The sector has 2 gorilla families available for trekking. The Nkuringo families range on the steepest terrain of any Bwindi sector — the trek itself crosses a deep valley and climbs the far side through dense forest. Nkuringo is not recommended for visitors with limited mobility or trekking fitness. Accommodation: Nkuringo Safari Camp (mid-range, USD 100 to 180 per person), Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge (luxury, also accessible from this side).

For a self-drive visitor on a Uganda western circuit driving from Queen Elizabeth or Lake Bunyonyi, Rushaga is often the most practical sector because its location in southern Bwindi shortens the drive from the Ishasha sector or Kabale. Buhoma is more convenient for visitors approaching from the north (Fort Portal direction).
