Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA) have progressively moved toward online pre-payment through the tanzaniaparks.go.tz eCitizen portal. By 2027, the eCitizen pre-payment system is the recommended method for all TANAPA parks — it eliminates gate queuing for payment processing, provides a pre-printed or QR-code receipt that gate staff simply scan, and ensures availability of your preferred payment method in advance. However, cash payment remains possible at most gates, and card payment infrastructure has improved significantly since the pre-2020 era when only Serengeti and Ngorongoro had reliable card terminals. This guide covers the payment methods accepted at each major Tanzania park gate in 2027/2028.
eCitizen Online Pre-Payment (Recommended)
Tanzania’s tanzaniaparks.go.tz eCitizen portal accepts Visa, Mastercard, and mobile money payment online. You can pay for:
- Park entry fees (adults and children, per 24-hour period)
- Vehicle entry fees
- Campsite fees (TANAPA public campsites)
- Boat trip fees (where applicable)
Complete pre-payment generates a QR code receipt. Download this to your phone (screenshot it as a backup — no mobile data inside the parks). At the gate, present the QR code — the gate scanner processes it in under 2 minutes. Gate processing time with pre-payment: 5 to 15 minutes. Gate processing time with cash or on-site card payment: 20 to 60 minutes (longer in peak season when multiple vehicles are processing simultaneously).
Payment Methods at Major Gates (2027/2028)
- Serengeti (Naabi Hill, Ikoma, Kleins gates): eCitizen pre-pay (QR), USD cash, Visa/Mastercard terminals (card terminal availability confirmed at Naabi Hill gate; Ikoma and Kleins may have intermittent connectivity — pre-pay recommended)
- Ngorongoro Conservation Area (Lodoare gate): eCitizen pre-pay, USD cash, card terminal (most reliable card facility of any Tanzania gate — Lodoare has consistent power and internet)
- Tarangire (main gate): eCitizen pre-pay, USD cash, card terminal
- Lake Manyara (main gate): eCitizen pre-pay, USD cash, card
- Ruaha (Msembe gate): eCitizen pre-pay, USD cash — card terminal present but connectivity unreliable; carry USD cash as backup
- Mikumi (main gate): eCitizen pre-pay, USD cash
- Nyerere/Selous (Mtemere gate): eCitizen pre-pay, USD cash — card terminal present, connectivity variable
- Katavi (Sitalike gate): eCitizen pre-pay, USD cash — no reliable card terminal; carry cash
- Mahale (Bilenge gate): eCitizen pre-pay, USD cash
USD Cash Requirements
Carry USD cash as backup regardless of whether you plan to use eCitizen pre-payment. Bank notes must be printed 2009 or later (some park gates refuse pre-2009 USD banknotes due to counterfeit concerns — this is a Tanzania-wide policy). Large denomination notes (USD 50 and USD 100) are preferred for large payments. Small USD denominations (USD 1, USD 5) are useful for tips but not required at park gates — fees are typically USD 29, USD 40, USD 52, or USD 57 per adult, and the gates can make change in USD or TZS.
Vehicle Entry Fee Payment
The TANAPA vehicle entry fee (USD 40 per vehicle per day at most parks, or USD 40 at NCA) is paid separately from the adult entry fee on the eCitizen portal. When pre-paying, you will fill in the vehicle registration number — this links the payment to the specific vehicle. If your hire vehicle registration changes (spare vehicle swap), contact the eCitizen support before gate entry to update the registration on the pre-payment receipt.
Serengeti Gate Queue Strategy
The Naabi Hill gate (Serengeti’s main southern entry from Ngorongoro) processes the largest volume of vehicles — typically 40 to 80 vehicles per morning during peak June to September season. With eCitizen pre-payment, the dedicated pre-payment processing lane clears vehicles in 5 to 10 minutes. Without pre-payment, expect 30 to 90 minutes of gate queuing on busy mornings. Enter the gate pre-payment queue before 7am for the fastest processing — the queue builds quickly between 7am and 9am as guided vehicles and lodge shuttles arrive at the gate simultaneously.
