Pre-Trip Booking: Two Permits Drive the Entire Itinerary

Book the gorilla trek permit before any other logistics. The Rwanda gorilla trekking permit (Volcanoes NP, USD 1,500 per person) is available through the Rwanda Development Board at rdb.rw — trekking dates on the specific days you require must be booked at minimum 3 to 6 months before travel for June to September peak season, and 4 to 8 weeks in advance for other months. The permit availability determines Day 2 of the itinerary. Once the gorilla permit date is confirmed, book the Nyungwe chimpanzee tracking permit for Day 4 through the same RDB portal (USD 250 per person, also advance booking required but typically available within 4 to 6 weeks of travel date). The gorilla permit is the bottleneck — secure it first and build everything else around it.

Day 1 — Kigali Arrival and Drive to Musanze (2 hours north-west of Kigali)

Arrive at Kigali International Airport and collect the hire vehicle. Drive north-west on the A1 highway to Musanze (95 km, approximately 2 hours, sealed tarmac throughout). The A1 passes through the central highlands with tea plantation views from the road at the 60 km point near Ruhengeri. Arrive Musanze early afternoon. The briefing assigns groups of a maximum 8 people per habituated gorilla family. Each family is tracked by a dedicated ranger team that has been with the gorillas since the previous day. The trek into the forest follows the family’s overnight position: distance from the trailhead varies from 45 minutes to 4 hours of uphill walking depending on where the gorillas slept. The forest terrain on the Volcanoes NP slopes is steep and the vegetation can be dense — sturdy hiking boots (not sandals), long trousers, long sleeves (to protect from stinging nettles and the cold at higher altitude), and a day pack with water are required. Once the gorilla group is located, one hour of observation time begins. Rwanda’s habituated gorilla families include Susa A (famous for twin gorillas Byishimo and Impano), Umubano, Amahoro, and others — family assignment is made at the briefing based on permit booking and fitness assessment. Return to the trailhead by 1 pm to 4 pm depending on trek duration. Afternoon rest at accommodation. Do not plan an afternoon drive on gorilla trek day — the physical effort of the morning’s trek is substantial for most visitors.

Day 3 — Musanze to Nyungwe Forest National Park (3.5 to 4 hours south)

Depart Musanze at 7 am to complete the drive to Nyungwe by late morning. The route follows the A1 south-east back through Kigali (1.5 hours from Musanze to Kigali), then south-west on the A4 through Butare (Huye) and into the Nyungwe highlands — a further 2 to 2.5 hours on sealed but winding highland tarmac. Total distance Musanze to Nyungwe (One&Only Nyungwe House area): approximately 290 km. The highlands south of Huye transition from tea plantation to the montane forest that signals the approach to Nyungwe. Stop at the Nyungwe NP gate for park fee pre-payment confirmation. The Nyungwe chimpanzee tracking is a different experience from Kibale NP (Uganda) — Nyungwe’s forest is denser and the terrain is more demanding, with significant altitude variation on the ridge tracks. The chimps range across a larger area than in the more open Kibale forest, meaning trek distances to find the community can be longer. One hour observation once the chimpanzees are located. Return by midday. Afternoon: the Ruwenzori colobus troop walk at Uwinka (no extra permit beyond park entry, ranger guided, the large colobus troops at Nyungwe habituate to visitors on the main Uwinka trails very easily — encounters with 50 to 150 colobus in a single troop feeding session are common). Evening departure from Nyungwe toward Kigali for an overnight in the capital before the final circuit day.

Day 5 — Kigali to Akagera National Park (2.5 hours east) and Big Five Circuit

Depart Kigali early (6 am) for Akagera National Park, arriving at the Kinyinya gate by 8:30 am. Pay entry fee by card at the gate (USD 40 per adult per day, USD 40 per vehicle per day). The Akagera circuit begins immediately inside the gate: the morning lion search on the western savannah (the resident pride of 30 animals uses the western grassland between the Kinyinya gate and Lake Ihema for morning hunting activity). The Lake Ihema boat trip (USD 35 per person, departs from the Akagera Game Lodge jetty, 2 hours) covers the hippo pods of 200 to 500 animals, Nile crocodile, and the shoebill stork in the papyrus margins.
