Ruaha National Park self-drive is Tanzania’s most rewarding and most challenging southern circuit destination — at 22,000 square kilometres, Ruaha is Tanzania’s largest national park (and one of Africa’s largest), receiving a tiny fraction of the visitors who crowd the Serengeti in peak season, and holding wildlife populations that dwarf most East Africa parks: 12,000 to 15,000 elephant (the largest concentration in Tanzania), 10,000 Cape buffalo, the highest density of wild dog in East Africa, and lion prides that can number 30+ individuals using the Great Ruaha River as a dry-season water source. The Ruaha National Park self-drive is 621km from Dar es Salaam via Morogoro and Iringa (7 to 8 hours driving), and requires a genuine expedition-level 4WD, a well-planned fuel strategy, and a minimum 3-night stay to begin to understand the park’s scale.
Dar es Salaam to Ruaha: The Route
Dar es Salaam to Morogoro (200km, 2.5 hours)
Drive west from Dar on the A7 highway to Morogoro (200km, 2.5 hours — good tarmac, dual carriageway in parts). Morogoro is the first major fuel stop — fill here. The Uluguru Mountains rise dramatically north of the A7 from Morogoro — one of Tanzania’s landmark road features.
Morogoro to Iringa (230km, 2.5 hours)
Continue west on the A7 to Iringa (230km from Morogoro, 2.5 hours). The A7 climbs through the Mikumi National Park section (the highway passes through the park — wildlife visible from the road without a park fee) and then rises to the Iringa plateau (1,600m elevation). Iringa is the main service town for Ruaha — fuel, supermarket, and the last reliable provisions before the park.
Iringa to Ruaha Gate (100km, 2.5 hours)
From Iringa, take the Ruaha murram road west (100km, 2.5 to 3 hours). The first 40km is tarmac to the Iringa-Ruaha junction at Tungamalenga; the final 60km to the Msembe gate is rough murram with significant corrugation and occasional rocky sections. 4WD is required for the Tungamalenga to Msembe section in the wet season and strongly recommended year-round. Carry at least 20 litres extra fuel from Iringa — no fuel inside Ruaha.
Ruaha National Park Entry (2027/2028)
- Adult entry: USD 70 per person per 24 hours (TANAPA eCitizen pre-payment)
- Vehicle entry: USD 40 per vehicle
- Public campsite: USD 35 per person per night

The Great Ruaha River Circuit: Best Game Drive Area
The Great Ruaha River is Ruaha’s wildlife magnet in the dry season (June to October) — the river’s permanent pools attract elephant, buffalo, hippo, lion, leopard, wild dog, and kudu throughout the day when the surrounding bush is parched. The Ruaha National Park self-drive Great Ruaha River circuit follows the river bank for 40km from the Msembe gate east — the most productive single game drive route in the park. Giant Kudu (a Ruaha speciality not found in the northern circuit parks), lesser kudu, and the distinctive roan antelope are seen along this circuit. Wild dog sightings require luck and early starts — the Ruaha wild dog packs are large (20 to 40 individuals) and range widely.
Why Ruaha Rewards a Longer Stay
Ruaha’s scale (22,000 sq km) means a single day’s self-drive covers only a small fraction of the accessible circuit. Three nights minimum gives two full-day game drives and reveals the park’s distinctive dry-season elephant dynamics — the mega-herds of 200 to 500 elephants converging on the river from across the plateau are a sight visible only to visitors who stay long enough for the herds to cycle through the river zone.
