Lake Kivu is one of the most beautiful lakes in Africa — a vast blue Rift Valley lake straddling the Rwanda-DRC border, surrounded by volcanic mountains, island-dotted bays, and the terraced hillsides that characterise Rwanda’s southwestern highlands. For self-drive visitors, Lake Kivu serves as a natural complement to the gorilla circuit — the lakeside town of Rubavu (Gisenyi) is just 2 hours from Volcanoes National Park, making a gorilla trek + lake rest combination one of Rwanda’s most satisfying two-stop itineraries.

Three Lake Kivu Towns for Self-Drive Visitors

Rubavu (Gisenyi): The Northern Access Point

Rubavu sits on the northern shore of Lake Kivu, 90 km west of Musanze (1.5 hours) and bordering the DRC city of Goma across the Nyabugogo border. It is the most-visited lake town — accessible after gorilla trekking at Volcanoes NP — with excellent beaches, swimming (the lake is methane-rich but the upper layers are clean and safe for swimming), and a relaxed resort atmosphere that contrasts sharply with the intensity of the gorilla trek experience. The Serena Hotel Kivu and La Paillote Resort are the best upmarket options; multiple mid-range guesthouses fill the rest of the spectrum.

Karongi (Kibuye): The Middle Lake

Karongi is Rwanda’s most beautiful lakeside town — set on a peninsula surrounded by water on three sides, with islands visible in the bay and forested hills rising steeply behind. The town itself is small and quiet. Activities: island boat trips (Amahoro Island, Napoleon Island), kayaking, and swimming. Distance from Kigali: 120 km, 2.5 hours. Best for a 2-night peaceful retreat between parks.

Rusizi (Cyangugu): The Southern Lake Town

Rusizi sits at the southern tip of Lake Kivu, adjacent to the DRC border and convenient for visitors visiting Nyungwe Forest (90 km north). Less tourist infrastructure than Rubavu or Karongi but an authentic Rwandan lakeside experience. The drive from Nyungwe to Rusizi (the lake road south) is one of Rwanda’s most scenic drives.

Lake Kivu Circuit: Self-Drive Route

A Lake Kivu circuit drive — departing from and returning to Kigali, following the lake’s eastern shore southward from Rubavu through Karongi to Rusizi then cutting inland via Nyungwe back to Kigali — covers approximately 600 km over 4 days. This is a comprehensive southwestern Rwanda circuit combining the lake, Nyungwe Forest, and the option to detour north to Volcanoes NP. See the full 7-day Rwanda itinerary guide for how to integrate the lake into a complete national parks circuit.
