Entebbe International Airport sits on a peninsula of Lake Victoria 45 kilometres south of Kampala’s city centre. The road between the two — the Entebbe Expressway (a toll road opened in 2018) — is the fastest airport approach road in East Africa, reducing the Kampala-Entebbe journey from a historic 1.5 to 2 hours to a consistent 40 to 55 minutes in normal traffic. For self-drive visitors, the Kampala-Entebbe relationship has important practical implications: hire vehicles are picked up in Kampala (not at the airport for most specialist operators), the drive from the hire company’s compound to the airport at trip end needs to be planned carefully, and the Entebbe area itself has accommodation options that suit late arrivals or early departures.
The Entebbe Expressway
The Entebbe Expressway (officially the Kampala-Entebbe Express Highway) is a 4-lane divided toll highway running from the Busega interchange (southwest Kampala) to the Entebbe Airport terminal. Toll booths are at two points — the charge for private vehicles (including hire vehicles) is approximately UGX 2,500 to 5,000 per toll point (approximately USD 0.65 to 1.35 at current exchange rates). Carry small Uganda Shilling notes for the toll — card payment is available at the booths but cash is faster. The expressway bypasses the notorious Kampala traffic congestion on the old Entebbe Road, but the approach to the Busega interchange from central Kampala can still be congested in peak hours (7am-9am and 4pm-7pm).
Journey Times: Kampala to Entebbe
- Off-peak (10am to 3pm, weekdays): 40 to 50 minutes from central Kampala
- Morning peak (7am to 9am): 50 to 70 minutes from central Kampala (Busega junction approach is congested)
- Evening peak (4pm to 7pm): 60 to 80 minutes — plan the airport drop at this time and add a buffer
- Weekend (Saturday): 40 to 55 minutes; (Sunday morning): 35 to 45 minutes (lightest traffic of the week)
Hire Vehicle Pickup at the Start of Your Safari
Most Uganda specialist hire companies are based in Kampala, not at Entebbe Airport. Options for getting from the airport to the hire company on arrival:
- Hire company airport delivery: Many Kampala-based operators offer airport delivery — the vehicle is brought to you at Entebbe on arrival day, typically for a fee of USD 50 to 100. This eliminates the need for a separate taxi. Arrange this at booking.
- Entebbe-based hire: A small number of companies are based in Entebbe and can deliver directly at the terminal. These tend to be smaller operations — verify vehicle quality as carefully as you would for any company.
- Taxi to Kampala hire company: Standard airport taxis from Entebbe to Kampala cost USD 25 to 35 on the meter. Budget 60 to 90 minutes for this transfer including wait time at the taxi rank. Uber and Bolt (ride-hailing apps) are active in Uganda and typically cost USD 18 to 25 for the same trip.
Entebbe Accommodation: When to Stay Here Instead of Kampala
Entebbe town (separate from the airport) has several quality guesthouses and hotels that suit travellers arriving on evening flights who want to begin their circuit the next morning without the Kampala city experience. Entebbe is quiet, green (it is on the lake peninsula), and more relaxed than Kampala. The botanical gardens (Uganda’s national botanical gardens, open daily, excellent birdwatching including shoebill stork in the adjacent papyrus) are a pleasant afternoon activity for travellers arriving early. If your first safari day requires a departure before 7am from Kampala — common for circuits beginning with Murchison Falls — staying at Entebbe the night before and driving through Kampala at 5am avoids the peak traffic entirely.
