Jinja Uganda self-drive is the most popular day-trip or overnight addition to a Uganda safari circuit from Kampala — the town of Jinja (90km east of Kampala on the A109 highway, approximately 2 hours drive) sits at the point where the Victoria Nile leaves Lake Victoria and begins its 6,700km journey to the Mediterranean. The Jinja Uganda self-drive visit combines the world-class Nile white-water rafting experience (Grade 3 to 5 rapids on one of the most exciting commercially run rafting rivers in the world) with the Source of the Nile boat trip (a peaceful 2-hour boat excursion to the spring point where Speke identified the Nile’s origin in 1862) and optional activities including kayaking, bungee jumping (one of only two bungee jump sites in East Africa), and stand-up paddleboarding on the Nile.
Nile Rafting from Jinja: Grades and Operators
- Grade 5 sections: The half-day and full-day Nile rafting circuits from Jinja include Grade 5 class rapids (the highest commercially run grade) — Bujagali Falls, Itanda Falls, and Nile Special are the key Grade 5 sections. No prior rafting experience required — the professional guide teams provide a full safety briefing and the rubber rafts seat 8 to 10 people with a certified guide.
- Operators: Adrift Uganda (based at Hairy Lemon Island camp), Nile River Explorers — both operate from the Bujagali Falls area, 8km from Jinja town. Drive to Bujagali from Jinja town: 20 minutes on tarmac road.
- Cost (2027): Half-day rafting (Grade 3 and 4 sections): USD 85 to 100/person. Full-day rafting (including Grade 5 Itanda): USD 120 to 150/person.
Source of the Nile Boat Trip
- What it is: A 2-hour boat excursion from the Nile Bank Club in Jinja town to the spring point where the Nile leaves Lake Victoria (marked with a floating buoy at the Owen Falls Dam reservoir area)
- Cost: Approximately USD 15 to 20 per person
- Best time: Morning — calmer water, better photography light
Jinja Self-Drive Circuit from Kampala: Planning
- From Kampala (Entebbe Road): 90km east on A109 — 2 hours. The Kampala-Jinja section of the A109 is Uganda’s most heavily trafficked road — depart before 7am or after 9am to avoid the peak-hour congestion on the outskirts of Kampala
- Day trip or overnight: A day trip from Kampala for the Source of the Nile boat trip and a half-day rafting session is logistically possible. Overnight at one of the Jinja riverside guesthouses allows a dawn Source of the Nile visit plus full-day rafting without the return Kampala drive pressure.
