Hell’s Gate National Park is one of Kenya’s most unique national parks for self-drive visitors — it is the only East Africa national park where visitors are permitted to cycle and walk freely inside the park without a guide, in the presence of wildlife including zebra, giraffe, baboon, warthog, and buffalo. The Hell’s Gate National Park self-drive experience combines a hire vehicle for the outer road access with bicycle hire at the park gate (or bringing your own cycle) for the internal park road, creating a hybrid vehicle-and-cycling day trip from Naivasha that is unlike any other East Africa park experience. At approximately 90 minutes from Nairobi, Hell’s Gate is accessible as a day trip before or after the main safari circuit.

Hell’s Gate Park Layout and Activities

  • Cycling circuit (24km loop): The main road through Hell’s Gate is a 24km loop accessible to cyclists — the road runs through open rift valley floor between the dramatic Olkaria and Longonot volcanic escarpments. Bicycle hire at the gate: KES 800 to 1,200 per day (approximately USD 6 to 9). No guide required for cycling.
  • Walking: Visitors may also walk the park road on foot — the wildlife (zebra, warthog, buffalo) is accustomed to people and allows closer approach on foot than from a vehicle.
  • George Tower and Fischer’s Tower: The two dramatic volcanic basalt columns that dominate the Hell’s Gate landscape — accessible by foot trail from the main park road. No technical climbing required to reach the viewpoints around the base.
  • Gorge Walk (Hell’s Gate Gorge): A trail descends into the Hell’s Gate Gorge (a narrow slot canyon carved by a prehistoric Naivasha River overflow). The gorge walk includes a hot spring section with warm water channels. Entry fee for the gorge walk: KES 1,200/person (approximately USD 8) paid at the gorge trail entrance inside the park.
