Rwanda is East Africa’s most compact country for safari self-driving — the country is 26,338 square kilometres, smaller than Belgium, and every national park is reachable from Kigali within 3 hours. A 7-day self-drive circuit covers all three of Rwanda’s primary wildlife destinations: Volcanoes National Park in the northwest (mountain gorillas), Nyungwe Forest National Park in the southwest (chimpanzees, colobus monkeys, canopy walkway), and Akagera National Park in the east (Big Five, lake boat trips). The roads throughout Rwanda are outstanding by East Africa standards — the RN1, RN2, and RN3 highways connecting the three parks are tarmac, well-maintained, and clearly signed. A medium 4×4 or even a robust 2WD handles Rwanda’s circuit roads without difficulty; only certain internal tracks at Akagera benefit from high clearance.

Day 1: Arrive Kigali, Vehicle Pickup

Arrive Kigali International Airport. Pick up hire vehicle — confirm vehicle readiness, spare tyre, jump leads, and first aid kit. Drive to Kigali city accommodation (15 minutes from airport). Orientation in Kigali: the Genocide Memorial, the city market, and the Inema Arts Center. Kigali is one of the cleanest and most orderly capital cities in Africa — the city’s mandatory monthly community cleaning day (Umuganda) on the last Saturday of every month keeps the urban environment extremely well maintained. Fill fuel — Kigali has excellent fuel stations. Plan the next day’s 6am departure for Musanze.

Day 2: Kigali to Volcanoes (110km) + Afternoon at Kinigi

Depart Kigali at 6:00am. Drive the RN1 north to Musanze (110km, 1.5 hours). Arrive Kinigi by 8:30am — check in with RDB headquarters, confirm gorilla trek permit for Day 3, book golden monkey tracking for Day 2 afternoon (USD 100 per person). Afternoon golden monkey tracking (7:30am briefing next day — if doing gorilla tomorrow, golden monkey today). Return to Musanze accommodation for the night. Overnight Musanze/Kinigi area.

Day 3: Gorilla Trekking at Volcanoes National Park

Arrive Kinigi by 6:30am for the 7:00am gorilla briefing. Trek (1 to 5 hours depending on gorilla family location). One hour with the gorillas. Return to Kinigi for debrief, certificate, and photo opportunity with the park map. Lunch in Musanze. If energy allows: afternoon visit to the Dian Fossey Research Institute museum in Musanze (20 minutes, covers the history of gorilla research in the Virunga and Fossey’s work). Overnight Musanze.

Day 4: Musanze to Nyungwe Forest (230km, 3.5 to 4 Hours)

Depart Musanze at 7:00am. Drive the RN2 south through Kigali (optional quick fuel stop), then southwest on the RN1 through Huye/Butare and into the Nyungwe Forest Reserve. The last 45km from Huye to the Uwinka park centre passes through the most beautiful road section in Rwanda — the forest is on both sides of the tarmac road, the altitude rises to 2,400 metres, and the tea plantations give way to ancient Afromontane forest. The Uwinka visitor centre is at the highest point of the road through the forest. Arrive by midday, check in, book the canopy walkway for the afternoon. Overnight in the forest area (Nyungwe Forest Lodge or Gisakura Tea Estate accommodation).

Day 5: Nyungwe — Chimp Tracking and Canopy Walkway

6:30am chimpanzee tracking briefing at the Uwinka visitor centre. Trek with the Cyamudongo chimp community (2 to 4 hours, USD 90 per person). Return by midday. Afternoon: Nyungwe canopy walkway (200 metres of suspension bridge at 50 metres above the forest floor — one of only two such canopy walkways in East Africa). The walkway gives access to the mid-canopy bird zone and a bird’s-eye view of the forest interior. Other primates visible on the walkway trail: Angola colobus (in the largest troop in Africa, estimated 400 individuals), L’Hoest’s monkey, and olive baboon. Overnight Nyungwe area.

Day 6: Nyungwe to Akagera (360km, 5 to 6 Hours)

Depart Nyungwe at 6:30am. Drive east via Huye/Butare, Kigali, and northeast to Akagera on the RN3 (360km total, 5 to 6 hours including Kigali fuel stop). Arrive at Akagera south gate (Musumariro Gate) by early afternoon. Afternoon game drive — northern savannah for lion territory and elephant. Overnight inside the park (Ruzizi Tented Lodge or campsite) or at the park gate area.

Day 7: Full Day Akagera + Return to Kigali (140km)

6:00am game drive (optional exit before public entry hours if staying inside the park). 8:00am boat trip on Lake Ihema (2 hours, USD 35 to 45 per adult — hippo and crocodile, African fish eagle, Nile monitor lizard). Exit park by noon. Drive Kigali (140km, 2 hours). Return hire vehicle at Kigali. The 7-day circuit is complete: three national parks, mountain gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking, canopy walkway, lake boat trip, and the Big Five at Akagera.
