Uganda straddles the equator — there are no defined summer and winter. Instead, Uganda has two dry seasons and two wet seasons annually, with regional variation depending on altitude and proximity to the major lake bodies. Understanding Uganda’s climate by region is essential for planning a self-drive safari: the best month for gorilla trekking in Bwindi is not the same as the best month for savannah wildlife at Murchison Falls, and road conditions vary dramatically by season in specific areas.
Uganda’s Four Seasons
- June–September (long dry season): Uganda’s peak safari season. Dry roads, best visibility in parks, highest wildlife concentrations near water. Gorilla permits most in demand — book 6 months ahead. Hottest temperatures in northern parks (Murchison, Kidepo). Best overall season for self-drive.
- December–February (short dry season): Second-best season. Fewer tourists than July–August. Good road conditions. Slightly cooler than peak season. Good gorilla permit availability with 2–3 months notice. Excellent value on accommodation.
- March–May (long rains): Heaviest rainfall season. Bwindi and Kidepo roads most challenging. Muddy parks in Uganda’s west. Outstanding birding as migrants arrive. 20–40% cheaper accommodation. Gorilla trekking continues year-round.
- October–November (short rains): Afternoon showers, mostly manageable. Green landscapes for photography. Fewer tourists than peak. Reasonable road conditions except after prolonged rain events.
Temperature by Region
- Kampala and Lake Victoria area (altitude 1,200m): 24–28°C daytime year-round. Evenings comfortable. Rarely cold.
- Western parks (Queen Elizabeth, 900–1,200m): 25–32°C daytime, 17–20°C nights. Hot during dry season midday.
- Northern parks (Murchison Falls, 600–900m): 28–35°C daytime in dry season. The hottest part of Uganda. Carry extra water.
- Southwest highlands (Bwindi, Kabale, 1,500–2,500m): 18–24°C daytime, 8–14°C nights. Can be cold, especially at altitude. Bring warm clothing.
- Kidepo Valley (900–1,200m): Warm days, cool nights. Semi-arid — drier and warmer than western Uganda.
Best Month to Visit Each Park
- Bwindi (gorilla trekking): July–September for easiest roads and best forest conditions. December–February is second choice. March–May: roads challenging but trekking continues.
- Queen Elizabeth: June–August for best wildlife visibility. December–February second choice.
- Murchison Falls: June–August. December–February also excellent.
- Kidepo Valley: June–August only (dry season roads). March–May risks impassable Kitgum approach.
- Kibale Forest: Year-round (chimpanzees not affected by season significantly). Avoid the very wet March–May if road conditions concern you.
