Tipping in Uganda is neither mandatory nor expected in the way it might be in some other African safari countries, but it is deeply appreciated by the rangers, guides, and camp staff who work hard to make your experience successful. Understanding who typically receives tips and in what amounts removes the awkwardness of the question on your last day in each park. These are the current norms as of 2024.
Gorilla Trekking: Who to Tip
- Lead ranger guide: USD $15–$20 per person in your group. This is the ranger who led the trek, briefed you, and managed the gorilla encounter itself. On a group of 8, the ranger may receive USD $80–$120 from the group collectively.
- Porters (if hired): Gorilla trek porters carry heavy day packs for visitors who find the steep terrain challenging. Porter hire costs approximately USD $15, and an additional USD $5–$10 tip is standard. Porters provide invaluable support on steep Bwindi terrain — they also support you physically on difficult sections.
- Trackers: The advance team that locates the gorilla family and radioes back to the lead rangers. They are not always present at the encounter but USD $5–$10 per tracker from the group is appropriate if they are thanked at the briefing point.
Chimpanzee Tracking
- Lead ranger guide: USD $10–$15 per person. Similar logic to gorilla trekking but the activity costs less and the tip should reflect that proportionally.
- Additional guides/trackers: USD $5 each if they were actively involved in your tracking experience.
Game Drive Rangers
On a self-drive safari, you do not typically have a game drive ranger unless you have hired one from the UWA gate. If you have hired a ranger guide for the day (common in Kidepo for lion-finding): USD $15–$20 for a full day. The ranger should be fed and watered during the drive — either carry extra food and drink to share, or ensure they eat when you stop for lunch.
Boat Trips (Kazinga Channel, Murchison Falls)
- Boat captain and crew: USD $5–$10 total for the group is appropriate. Tips for the boat crew are less common than for walking guides but still appreciated.
Lodge and Camp Staff
- Lodge staff (general): USD $2–$5 per person per night, left in the room or given to the room attendant directly on departure.
- Camp cooking staff: USD $5–$10 total for the group per night if meals were particularly good.
Vehicle Driver (If Renting with a Driver)
If you have rented a vehicle with a driver (as opposed to full self-drive where you drive yourself), the driver typically receives USD $10–$20 per day as a tip, paid at the end of the trip. Full-time drivers who double as guides (common on combined birding/wildlife circuits) warrant the higher end of this range.
