Akagera National Park safari self-drive — Rwanda’s savannah game drive park on the Tanzania border, 160 km east of Kigali — is the most underrated East Africa safari destination by any measure: a 1,122 km² park that was successfully restocked with lion (2015) and black rhino (2017), making it the only Rwanda national park where self-drive visitors can see the Big Five, and the only Rwanda park where the wildlife experience is a true savannah game drive rather than a forest primate encounter. The Akagera safari self-drive is compact enough to cover the entire park circuit in 2 days from Kigali on a perfectly sealed approach road, with the Lake Ihema hippo and crocodile boat trip as the unique experience no other Rwanda park provides. This guide covers the Akagera safari self-drive for 2027/2028.
Akagera Safari Self-Drive: Wildlife
- Lion: Reintroduced 2015 from South Africa. A pride of 30+ lions now established in the park. Best sightings in the north sector (Mutumba Hills area), dry season.
- Black rhino: Reintroduced 2017. Population approximately 35 individuals. Tracked by rangers — self-drive visitors occasionally encounter rhino on the main tracks; guided rhino walks also available (separate fee).
- Elephant, buffalo, zebra, giraffe: All present year-round in the Akagera River floodplain and grassland areas.
- Hippo and crocodile: Lake Ihema boat trip — 2-hour boat cruise with guide, seeing hippo pods and Nile crocodile at lake level. USD 35/person. Highly recommended.
- Shoebill stork: Present in the papyrus swamps along the Akagera River — one of the most sought-after African bird species.
