The Volcanoes Gorilla Trail is Rwanda’s flagship self-drive safari experience — driving the RN2 from Kigali to Musanze (2.5 hours), overnighting in Musanze, and trekking into the Virunga volcanic forest at dawn to spend one hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family. The mountain gorilla encounter is one of the most profound wildlife experiences on earth, and Rwanda’s gorilla trekking is the most accessible in Africa.
