The Nairobi to Naivasha drive — 90km from Nairobi city centre to Lake Naivasha on the floor of the Great Rift Valley — is one of Kenya’s most scenic tarmac approaches and a standard first leg on any Kenya self-drive safari departing Nairobi northward. The two route options (the new A104 expressway via Mai Mahiu cutting the descent to 45 minutes, and the older B3 escarpment road via Limuru that offers the more dramatic Rift Valley viewpoint descent) give the Nairobi to Naivasha self-drive two genuinely different experiences. For a first-time Kenya self-drive visitor, the Nairobi to Naivasha drive on the old escarpment road is the more rewarding choice — the descent from 2,400m altitude at the escarpment rim to 1,884m at the Naivasha floor provides one of the most dramatic Rift Valley panoramas available from a tarmac road anywhere in East Africa.
Route 1: A104 via Mai Mahiu (Fastest)
- Distance: 90km from Nairobi CBD to Lake Naivasha town
- Drive time: 1.5 to 2 hours (traffic dependent — Nairobi exits can add 30 to 45 minutes in rush hour)
- Road quality: Tarmac all the way, generally good condition
- Via: Nairobi southern ring road → A104 towards Nakuru → Mai Mahiu junction → Naivasha town
- Scenery: The descent from the escarpment at Mai Mahiu gives a brief Rift Valley view before the road flattens to the valley floor
Route 2: B3 via Limuru Escarpment (Scenic)
- Distance: 110km from Nairobi CBD via Limuru
- Drive time: 2.5 to 3.5 hours (winding single-lane escarpment road, heavy lorry traffic on the descent)
- Via: Nairobi northern CBD exit → Limuru → Naivasha Escarpment Viewpoint → Naivasha town
- Scenery: The viewpoint at the top of the escarpment looks across the entire width of the Rift Valley from 2,400m — Lake Naivasha, Lake Elementaita, and on clear days Longonot volcano are visible simultaneously
- Road caution: The escarpment descent road has sharp hairpin bends — descend in low gear. Lorries slow the descent significantly.
