Uganda wildlife calendar self-drive — the month-by-month guide to Uganda’s major national parks (Bwindi Impenetrable NP, Murchison Falls NP, Queen Elizabeth NP, Kidepo Valley NP, and Kibale Forest NP) for self-drive visitors in 2027 and 2028 — reveals that Uganda’s year-round wildlife appeal is driven by the permanent resident primate populations (gorillas and chimpanzees) that are accessible in any month, while the savannah parks (Murchison and Kidepo) peak in the dry season months. The Uganda wildlife calendar for self-drive visitors is organized around the two dry seasons (December to February and June to September) when road conditions in all parks are at their best and wildlife concentrations at the water sources are highest. This guide covers the Uganda self-drive wildlife calendar month by month for 2027/2028.
Uganda Self-Drive Wildlife Calendar: Month by Month
- January to February (dry season): Murchison Falls NP is excellent — lions on the north bank, elephant concentrations at the Nile, boat trips producing crocodile and hippo sightings in excellent dry-season light. Kidepo Valley NP at its most accessible (roads dry, predator sightings high around the permanent Narus Valley water). Gorilla trekking at Bwindi excellent in any month — January is a good low-demand season for permit availability.
- March to April (long rains begin): Murchison and Kidepo road conditions deteriorate from late March. Bwindi gorilla trekking continues normally — the mountain forest receives rain year-round and the gorilla encounter is unaffected. Kibale chimp trekking excellent — chimpanzees use the rain season feeding opportunities actively. Queen Elizabeth NP crater area wildflowers and greenery at peak.
- May (tail of long rains): Wet season peak. Murchison north bank tracks are challenging. Bwindi, Kibale, and Queen Elizabeth NP (all with tarmac or all-weather access roads) are fully accessible. Bird diversity at maximum — Uganda has 1,066+ bird species, with the most visible diversity in the wet season.
- June to September (long dry season — best overall Uganda self-drive period): The most recommended Uganda self-drive season. All parks fully accessible. Murchison Falls game drives produce the highest concentration of lion and elephant sightings of the year. Kidepo Valley NP peaks — the Narus Valley permanent water attracts extraordinary concentrations of wildlife including African wild dog in some years. The July to August period produces the most reliable clear skies in western Uganda (Bwindi and Kibale).
- October to November (short rains): October rain begins but most Uganda park tracks remain passable for 4×4. Gorilla trekking unaffected. Bird migration season brings Palearctic migrants — excellent birdwatching in Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth. Permit demand drops below the June-August peak.
- December (short dry season): December is an excellent Uganda month — roads dry again after November rains, visitor numbers drop from peak, and the dry season wildlife concentrations begin building. Good alternative to the June-September peak for visitors unable to travel mid-year.
