The Uganda to Rwanda self-drive circuit uses two border crossings depending on the route: Cyanika (the high-altitude border crossing between Kisoro and Musanze/Ruhengeri, used by visitors combining Bwindi gorilla trekking with Rwanda’s Volcanoes NP) and Gatuna/Katuna (the main A2 highway crossing between Kampala and Kigali, the fastest and most used commercial crossing for the Uganda-Rwanda connection). The Uganda to Rwanda self-drive border crossing is generally efficient — Rwanda’s immigration system is well-organised and Rwanda’s inspectors are known for being thorough but fast, with most vehicle crossings completing in 30 to 60 minutes. The plastic bag inspection at the Rwanda side is conducted at both crossings.

Cyanika Border: Bwindi to Volcanoes NP Connection

  • Location: High-altitude border crossing at 2,500m elevation, 10km from Kisoro (Uganda) and 25km from Musanze (Rwanda)
  • Used for: The Uganda gorilla circuit to Rwanda gorilla circuit connection — Bwindi Nkuringo or Rushaga sector to Volcanoes NP in one road crossing day
  • Drive from Bwindi Rushaga gate to Cyanika border: 25km, approximately 45 minutes on steep murram road
  • Drive from Cyanika border to Volcanoes NP Kinigi gate: 25km, approximately 30 minutes on good tarmac
  • Processing time at Cyanika: 30 to 60 minutes — smaller border than Gatuna with less traffic. Rwanda immigration checks all vehicles for plastic bags.

Gatuna/Katuna Border: The Main Kampala-Kigali Route

  • Location: On the A2 highway, 90km north of Kigali, 80km south of Mbarara (Uganda)
  • Drive Kampala to Gatuna: 380km via Mbarara on A109/A4 — approximately 5 to 6 hours
  • Drive Gatuna to Kigali: 90km on excellent RN2 tarmac — approximately 1.5 hours
  • Total Kampala to Kigali via Gatuna: approximately 470km, 7 to 8 hours including border processing
  • Processing time: 45 to 90 minutes — Gatuna/Katuna is a major commercial crossing with significant truck traffic. Visitor vehicles typically processed faster than commercial trucks.
