The Uganda to Kenya self-drive border crossing for hire vehicle visitors uses either the Malaba border post (on the A104 Kampala-Eldoret-Nairobi highway, the most common commercial route) or the Busia border post (25km south of Malaba, a quieter crossing that saves driving time for visitors routing to Kisumu and the lake Victoria circuit). Both Uganda to Kenya self-drive border crossings require the same documentation set for a hire vehicle: COMESA Yellow Card endorsed for both countries, hire company letter of authority authorising the vehicle to cross to Kenya, vehicle log book, driver’s passport with valid visa for both countries, and the CDW insurance certificate. The processing time at Malaba typically ranges from 1 to 3 hours depending on commercial traffic volume.
Malaba Border Post: Uganda to Kenya
Location and Approach
Malaba border post is on the A104 highway, 245km east of Kampala (3 hours), and 342km west of Nairobi (4 hours via Eldoret). The Uganda side (Malaba UG) and Kenya side (Malaba KE) are separated by approximately 1km of no-man’s land. Commercial truck traffic at Malaba is heavy — the Uganda-Kenya highway carries significant East Africa goods traffic and truck queues at Malaba can extend 2 to 5km in each direction during peak commercial hours (Tuesday to Thursday mornings).
The Crossing Process
- Uganda exit: Stop at the Uganda immigration office (Uganda Revenue Authority building on the right before the border). Present passport and obtain Uganda exit stamp. Vehicle documentation check at the Uganda Customs office (adjacent).
- No-man’s land drive: Drive through the 1km stretch between Uganda and Kenya immigration posts. Do not stop — no commercial activity is permitted in no-man’s land.
- Kenya entry: Stop at the Kenya immigration building (left side of the road at the Kenya checkpoint). Present passport, pay for East African Tourist Visa (USD 100 if not already issued in Uganda) or present existing valid visa. Kenya Customs vehicle check — present log book, COMESA Yellow Card, letter of authority from hire company.
Busia Border Post: Uganda to Kenya (Alternative Route)
- Location: 25km south of Malaba on the B9 from Kampala via Jinja. Quieter than Malaba — less commercial traffic.
- Best for: Visitors routing from Kampala to Kisumu (Lake Victoria) or the Masai Mara via the Lake Victoria-Kericho corridor (saves 30km vs Malaba route for the Masai Mara destination).
- Process: Same documentation requirements as Malaba — identical Uganda exit and Kenya entry sequence.
East Africa Tourist Visa at the Border
The East Africa Tourist Visa (USD 100) covers multiple-entry access to Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda — issued at any of the three countries’ points of entry. A visitor who purchased the EAC Tourist Visa on entering Uganda can cross to Kenya at Malaba without paying additional visa fees. Single-entry Kenya visas (purchased separately or on arrival) require a new visa payment for re-entry into Kenya after a Uganda visit. Confirm your visa status before the Uganda-Kenya crossing to avoid unexpected payment at the border.
