The Ssese Islands are an archipelago of 84 tropical islands in Lake Victoria — Uganda’s most surprising escape from the inland safari circuit. Located 2-4 hours by ferry from the Uganda mainland (ferry from Entebbe to Bugala Island, the largest of the 84), the Ssese Islands offer dense tropical forest, freshwater beaches, some of Uganda’s finest fishing (Nile perch, tilapia, catfish), and the calm pace of lakeside island life that provides complete contrast to the intensity of gorilla trekking and game drives. For Uganda safari visitors with a rest day or two available, the Ssese Islands are the alternative to the typical Kampala-city supplement — a genuinely restorative retreat on Africa’s largest lake. This guide covers the ferry logistics, what to do on Bugala Island, and where to stay.
Getting There: Ferry Options
Entebbe Ferry (MV Kalangala)
The MV Kalangala operates between Entebbe’s Nakiwogo ferry landing and Lutoboka port on Bugala Island. The crossing takes approximately 2-2.5 hours and operates on a schedule that varies by season — check current departure times at Uganda Marine Transportation Authority (UMTA) or the Kalangala district website. Typical 2025 schedule: departures from Entebbe at 14:00 (weekdays) and return departures from Bugala at 08:00 (weekdays). Weekend schedules may add a morning crossing. Ticket: approximately UGX 15,000-20,000 per person (USD $4-5). Vehicles: the ferry can transport vehicles (large 4x4s included) — vehicle rate approximately UGX 80,000 (USD $22) depending on size. Advance booking recommended for vehicle transport on weekends and public holidays.
Bukakata Ferry (Alternative)
A faster alternative for visitors driving from Masaka rather than Entebbe: the Bukakata ferry terminal (130 km from Kampala on the A109 Masaka Road) offers a 1-hour crossing to Liku port on Bugala Island. This route is used primarily by Uganda residents and provides the fastest vehicle-equipped crossing if you are coming from the southwestern circuit rather than via Entebbe.
Bugala Island: Activities
Forest Birding
The Ssese Islands retain significant tropical forest cover — Bugala Island’s interior forest is an important Uganda birding location with several species of particular interest: the African paradise flycatcher (breeding on the island with male long-tail plumes visible May-August), the double-toothed barbet, the grey-capped warbler, and the remarkably dense population of African fish eagle that hunt the lake margins. Uganda’s national bird (the grey crowned crane) is common on the island’s wetland margins. Local guides for forest birding are available at the main resorts (Brovad Sands Lodge has established birding guide connections) — a 3-hour morning forest walk produces a species list of 40-60 birds on a good morning. Lake perimeter birding (by hired canoe at 06:00) adds the waterbird species: African pygmy kingfisher, pied kingfisher, malachite kingfisher, long-tailed cormorant, and the African darter.
Fishing
Lake Victoria fishing from the Ssese Islands can be arranged through any of the main resorts or independently at the lakeside fishing villages on the island’s western coast. Nile perch (Lake Victoria’s apex freshwater predator, reaching 200 kg in extreme cases — 5-20 kg fish are the typical catch) are targeted by trolling lure or live bait from small fibreglass boats. Half-day fishing: USD $30-60 per boat including guide, fuel, and equipment. Tilapia fishing (small-scale net or hand-line) from canoes is available as a more traditional experience — the local fishermen go out at 04:00 and return by 08:00; joining a fishing canoe for the early morning session (USD $10-15 negotiated directly with the fishermen at the beach) is the most authentic Ssese Islands experience available.
