Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is divided into four distinct trekking sectors, each managing different habituated gorilla families and providing a significantly different experience in terms of terrain difficulty, accessibility from Kigali and Kampala, and accommodation options. Many visitors book a Bwindi gorilla permit without realising that the sector to which their permit is assigned determines much of their actual experience — a Rushaga permit is a 90-minute drive from Ruhija, and the terrain difficulty between the gentler Buhoma valley and the steep Nkuringo ridge differs enormously. This guide compares all four Bwindi sectors for 2025 visitors.
Buhoma Sector (North)
Buhoma is Bwindi’s original and most established tourism sector — the Mubare family was the first Bwindi gorilla group to be fully habituated (completed 1993), and the Buhoma tourism infrastructure (the most diverse range of accommodation in any Bwindi sector, from budget bandas to luxury lodges) reflects 30+ years of tourism development. Gorilla families: Mubare family (9 individuals, the eldest Bwindi habituated group), Habinyanja family (17 individuals), Rushegura family (19 individuals — the most reliably seen Buhoma family, frequently encountered near the sector boundary road). Trek difficulty: Buhoma’s terrain is variable — the valley floor sections are relatively gentle, but the families range up the steep forest slopes above the valley when nesting at higher elevation. Overall, Buhoma trails are the most accessible of the four sectors. Accessibility: 485 km from Kampala via Mbarara (8 hours), 110 km from Kigali via Cyanika border (2.5 hours — the most accessible Bwindi sector from Rwanda). Best accommodation: Bwindi Lodge (Abercrombie & Kent, USD $600–800/night per person), Mahogany Springs (USD $400–600/night), Buhoma Lodge (USD $200–350/night).
Rushaga Sector (South)
Rushaga has the largest number of habituated families of any Bwindi sector — 6 families, including the Gorilla Habituation Experience (GHEX) family Bikingi for full-day encounters. Gorilla families: Mishaya family (16 individuals), Nshongi family (25 individuals — the largest Bwindi family), Kahungye family (17 individuals), Busingye family (9 individuals), Bweza family (11 individuals), and Bikingi family (GHEX, approximately 12 individuals in habituation). The multiple families mean Rushaga permits are more available than other sectors and booking lead time can be shorter. Trek difficulty: Rushaga terrain is steep — the sector is on a hillside above the Rushaga village, and most families range on the steep slopes above the trailhead. Physical fitness is more important in Rushaga than Buhoma. Accessibility: 530 km from Kampala via Mbarara and Kabale (9.5 hours), 70 km from Kigali via Cyanika border (2 hours — the closest Bwindi sector to Kigali). Best accommodation: Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge (USD $300–450/night), Rushaga Gorilla Camp (USD $200–280/night).
Ruhija Sector (East)
Ruhija is Bwindi’s highest-altitude sector (2,300–2,600 m) — the habituated families in this sector range through montane forest above the main road between Buhoma and the Kabale direction. Gorilla families: Bitukura family (14 individuals, the Ruhija sector’s primary trekking family), Oruzogo family (25 individuals), Kyaguliro family (used for Gorilla Habituation Experience — full-day encounters). Trek difficulty: Ruhija terrain includes some of the steepest climbs in Bwindi — the elevation and slope combination make Ruhija the most physically demanding sector. The compensating factor: the higher-altitude forest at Ruhija has a different character from the lower sectors — more moss, more giant heather, different bird species (the high-altitude Albertine Rift endemics are better encountered in Ruhija’s elevation range). Accessibility: 520 km from Kampala via Kabale (9.5 hours), 70 km from Kigali via Cyanika border. Best accommodation: Ruhija Gorilla Resort (USD $120–180/night).
Nkuringo Sector (Southwest)
Nkuringo is on the southwestern edge of Bwindi — the most remote sector and the one with the most dramatic views (the ridge above the trailhead has long-distance views toward the DRC Congo border). Gorilla families: Nkuringo family (19 individuals, the sector’s primary family). Trek difficulty: Nkuringo has a steep descent from the trailhead into the valley before re-ascending on the far side — the trek often requires a full 4–6 hours before finding the family, and the return ascent is demanding. The Nkuringo experience is the most physically challenging and most remote of the four sectors. Accessibility: 560 km from Kampala via Kabale and Kisoro (10+ hours — the Kisoro section involves a mountain road), 80 km from Kigali via Cyanika border and Kisoro (2.5 hours). Best accommodation: Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge (USD $500–700/night, on the ridge above the trailhead — the finest Nkuringo accommodation), Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge (USD $200–300/night).
