Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is divided into four gorilla trekking sectors: Buhoma (northwest), Ruhija (northeast), Rushaga (south), and Nkuringo (southwest). Each has different gorilla families, different access roads, and different accommodation options. Choosing the right sector depends on your self-drive vehicle capability, where your itinerary is coming from, and which accommodation level you prefer. This guide compares all four honestly.
Buhoma Sector: The Most Accessible and Established
Buhoma is the original gorilla trekking sector — the oldest and most developed. The approach road from the Kihihi direction is challenging but the most manageable of all four sectors: the descent from the main road to the valley bottom is steep and unpaved but shorter than the Nkuringo descent and better maintained than the Ruhija high-altitude road. Gorilla families: Mubare (the first habituated gorilla family in Uganda, very well-known), Habinyanja, Rushegura, and Katwe. Most accommodation options at all budget levels are in Buhoma. Distance from Kampala: 6–7 hours. Best for: first-time visitors, less experienced drivers, those wanting the most accommodation choice.
Rushaga Sector: Most Families, Best for Peak Season
Rushaga has the most gorilla families of any Bwindi sector — six habituated families (Bweza, Mishaya, Nshongi, Busingye, Kahungye, and Bikingi) and the most permits available per day. This makes it the most likely sector to have permit availability when other sectors are sold out. Access is via Kabale and the Kisoro road — this is a better road than the Buhoma approach and the Kabale–Rushaga leg involves less extreme descent. Good accommodation options including Rushaga Gorilla Camp and Gorilla Safari Lodge. Distance from Kampala: 9–10 hours. Best for: visitors with less flexible dates needing permit availability, couples wanting private lodge options, and anyone approaching from the south.
Ruhija Sector: Remote, High-Altitude, For Birders
Ruhija is the least visited sector, at the highest altitude (2,400 metres) and accessed via a notoriously rough approach road from Kabale. The road involves steep hairpin bends and can become seriously difficult after rain. The reward: Ruhija’s gorilla families (Bitukura, Oruzogo, Mukiza) tend to have smaller permit groups, the scenery is extraordinary, and the high-altitude forest has the best birding in Bwindi — specifically the Albertine Rift endemics that require a specialist guide and patience. Accommodation is limited — mainly Gorilla Valley Lodge. Best for: experienced off-road drivers, birders, those wanting the least-visited sector experience.
Nkuringo Sector: The Most Dramatic Setting
Nkuringo sits on a ridge above the Bwindi forest with views into the Democratic Republic of Congo — the most visually dramatic position of any Bwindi accommodation. The access road is the most challenging of all four sectors: a very steep descent on a narrow unpaved track that requires experienced low-range 4WD driving in wet conditions. Only one gorilla family is permitted here (Nkuringo group, occasionally moved to the Congo border region which can delay treks). Accommodation: Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge (luxury, USD $700+) and simple community accommodation. Best for: experienced drivers with Land Cruiser 70, those wanting luxury in an extraordinary setting, and visitors who have already done the easier sectors.
