Rwanda 10-Day Self-Drive: Two Gorilla Treks, Chimpanzee and Akagera Complete Guide

A Rwanda 10-day self-drive circuit with two mountain gorilla treks is the most complete single-country primate and wildlife itinerary in Africa. It combines two separate gorilla trek encounters at Volcanoes NP (each assigned to a different habituated gorilla family by the RDB rangers), golden monkey trekking in the Virunga bamboo forest, the full-day chimpanzee habituation experience at Nyungwe Forest NP, the Nyungwe canopy walk (160 metres above the forest floor on suspension bridges), a birding morning in Rwanda’s most biodiverse forest, and a 3-day circuit at Akagera National Park for the Big Five savannah experience including lion, black rhinoceros, elephant, and hippopotamus. The two gorilla treks distinguish this itinerary from the standard 7-day Rwanda circuit — the second trek allows encounter with a different habituated family, which has a different silverback personality, different family composition, and often a different terrain character (a lower-elevation family versus a high-slope family, for example). Many visitors describe the second gorilla trek as even more emotionally affecting than the first because the novelty anxiety is replaced by absorption in the encounter itself.

Permit Booking Sequence for the 10-Day Circuit

Four advance bookings are required before any other circuit logistics are confirmed. Book all through Rwanda Development Board at rdb.rw, in this exact order:

First gorilla trek permit (USD 1,500): Select a date in the first half of the itinerary — Day 2 works logistically. Book this first, 3 to 6 months ahead for June to October peak season. Second gorilla trek permit (USD 1,500): Select a date 2 to 3 days after the first trek — Day 5 gives a natural rhythm of trek, rest, trek. Both permits must be in the same name (your passport name) and both require the specific date and passport number at booking. The RDB system allows multiple gorilla permits per person on different dates.

Chimpanzee habituation experience (USD 1,500, maximum 4 participants per day) or standard chimp tracking (USD 250, maximum 8 participants): The habituation experience is the more complete encounter — a full day following the partially habituated chimpanzee group through its natural daily routine — but has very limited slots. Book 2 to 3 months ahead. Standard tracking gives a 1-hour observation with the habituated Mayebe group and is easier to secure 4 to 6 weeks ahead. Schedule this for Day 7 or Day 8 in the itinerary.

Golden monkey trek permit (USD 100): Book 2 to 4 weeks ahead. Schedule for Day 4 — the day after the second gorilla trek, using the same Kinigi briefing centre before driving south toward Nyungwe.

Day-by-Day 10-Day Rwanda Itinerary

Day 1 — Kigali to Musanze (89 km north, 1.5 hours on the A1): Collect vehicle at Kigali airport or hire company. Drive north on Rwanda’s sealed A1 highway to Musanze. Check into accommodation at Musanze or Kinigi (13 km from the briefing centre — preferred for shorter trek morning drive). Rest and preparation. The A1 road is excellent quality tarmac throughout and the Virunga volcanic chain appears on the northern horizon as the road rises out of Kigali’s suburbs.

Day 2 — First Mountain Gorilla Trek, Volcanoes NP (Family A): Rise 4:30 am. Depart by 5 am for 7 am Kinigi briefing. RDB rangers assign Family A for this visit — groups of 8 visitors maximum per family. Trek to the gorilla family: 45 minutes to 4 hours depending on their overnight position. One-hour observation window. Return to Kinigi and then to accommodation by 2 to 4 pm. Afternoon: rest, photograph review, early overnight for tomorrow’s rest day. Overnight Musanze.

Day 3 — Rest Day at Musanze: Twin Lakes and Dian Fossey Research Centre: Gentle recovery day. Morning visit to the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund’s Ellen DeGeneres Campus in Musanze — the exhibition on mountain gorilla conservation history provides context for the gorilla encounters that many visitors find significantly deepens the meaning of the treks. Afternoon: drive to the twin crater lakes of Ruhondo and Burera (20 km from Musanze) for the panoramic view of the Virunga chain’s volcanic cones reflected in the lake surface — one of Rwanda’s most striking landscapes and rarely visited by short-itinerary tourists. Return to Musanze for overnight.

Day 4 — Second Mountain Gorilla Trek, Volcanoes NP (Family B): Same 5 am departure for 7 am briefing. Assigned to a different habituated family from Day 2. Different family size, different composition of sub-adults and juveniles, different silverback personality — the comparison between the two encounters provides a genuine sense of the individual character of gorilla social groups rather than a single undifferentiated experience. Return and overnight Musanze.

Day 5 — Golden Monkey Trek and Cultural Village Visit: 5:30 am departure for 7 am golden monkey briefing at Kinigi. Trek to the habituated golden monkey troop (40 to 80 animals) in the Virunga bamboo zone — 45 to 90 minutes walking. One hour of observation: the golden monkeys’ vivid orange and black colouring, fast movement through bamboo, and social interactions within the troop are a dramatic contrast with the gorilla treks’ meditative intensity. Return to Musanze by noon. Afternoon: visit a Musanze cultural village for traditional dance demonstration and community craft experience (several operators near Kinigi, 1 hour). Overnight Musanze.

Day 6 — Drive Musanze to Nyungwe Forest (220 km, 3.5 to 4 hours): Morning departure south via the B7 through Ruhango and Huye. Optional Huye Rwanda National Museum stop (1 hour, excellent ethnographic and cultural collection). Continue through Rwanda’s southern tea estates to the Nyungwe Forest escarpment above Lake Kivu. Arrive Uwinka mid-afternoon. Short afternoon forest walk. Overnight Nyungwe Forest Lodge or Uwinka area guesthouse.

Day 7 — Chimpanzee Habituation or Tracking at Nyungwe NP: Habituation experience: 5 am departure. Standard tracking: 6 am departure. Rangers locate the Mayebe community by radio collar. Follow the 54-individual chimp group through the morning feeding and social period. The Nyungwe chimp encounter is the most physically active wildlife experience on the circuit — moving through dense forest canopy with a 54-chimp community calling, drumming, and moving at speed above you is categorically different in character from the gorilla encounter. Return by noon (standard) or 3 pm (habituation). Afternoon: Nyungwe canopy walk (2 pm from Uwinka). Overnight Nyungwe.

Day 8 — Nyungwe Dawn Birds and Drive to Akagera (380 km via Kigali): Dawn bird walk from Uwinka (1 hour, specialist montane forest species). Depart 8 am. Drive east via Huye and Ruhango to Kigali (205 km, 3 hours). Kigali lunch and fuel. Continue east on B9 through Kayonza to Akagera Kinyinya gate (167 km, 2.5 hours). First lake circuit at Akagera. Overnight at Shakani campsite or Akagera Game Lodge.

Day 9 — Akagera Full Day: Dawn Lion Circuit and Lake Safari: 5:30 am gate opening for the northern savannah lion and rhinoceros circuit. Afternoon lake circuit with hippo, crocodile, and waterbird observation. Optional boat cruise on Lake Ihema for shoebill stork sighting in the papyrus (book through Akagera Game Lodge). Overnight Akagera.

Day 10 — Final Akagera Dawn Circuit and Return to Kigali: Final 5:30 am dawn drive. Exit gate by 10 am. Drive west to Kigali (2.5 hours, 167 km). Vehicle return. International flight departure or overnight Kigali for next-day flight. Total circuit driving distance: approximately 1,000 km on sealed roads throughout.
