Lake Mburo National Park is the smallest of Uganda’s national parks — 370 square kilometres — and the most accessible from Kampala, sitting just 240 km southwest of the capital. It is uniquely free of lions and elephants, which makes it Uganda’s only park where you can walk and cycle within the wildlife area. This changes the safari experience entirely: instead of game driving from inside a vehicle, you can walk alongside zebra, watch hippos from the lake shore, and mountain bike through impala herds. It is also the cheapest national park entry in Uganda (USD $35 per person per day), making it an excellent first night stop on the way to Queen Elizabeth or Bwindi.
Getting to Lake Mburo from Kampala
Distance from Kampala: 240 km. Driving time: 3–3.5 hours. Take the A109 Masaka highway south and west. The turnoff for Lake Mburo is signposted between Lyantonde and Mbarara. The access road to the Sanga gate is 7 km of murram track, passable for most 2WD vehicles in dry season though a 4×4 is always preferable. The turnoff to the main Nshara gate is on better road.
This proximity makes Lake Mburo an ideal first or last night of a Uganda self-drive safari. If you are heading toward Queen Elizabeth, routing via Lake Mburo adds only one hour to your journey and gives you a full evening and morning game drive opportunity. The park is the only place in Uganda where you can see zebra — the only national park in the country with a zebra population.
Wildlife at Lake Mburo
Lake Mburo’s wildlife roster is compact but rewarding. Without the pressure of seeing lions or elephants, visitors tend to slow down and notice species they would bypass in a larger park:
- Plains zebra: Lake Mburo is the only place in Uganda where zebra are found. They are present year-round in the open grassland south of the lake, typically in herds of 20–80.
- Impala: The most numerous antelope in the park. Impala are absent from all other Uganda national parks — Lake Mburo is the only place you will see them. Large herds of 50–200 are common near the lake shore.
- Hippos: The five lakes of Lake Mburo NP host an excellent hippo population. The boat trip on Lake Mburo (USD $20 per person, 1.5 hours) offers close hippo encounters and excellent birding — African jacana, malachite kingfisher, African fish eagle, and papyrus gonolek are all possible along the lake shore.
- Eland: The world’s largest antelope, present in small groups throughout the park’s open woodland.
- Topi, warthog, olive baboon, vervet monkey: All consistently visible on game drives.
- Buffalo: Present in the park but less numerous than in other Uganda parks.
Activities: What Makes Lake Mburo Different
- Guided walking safari: Available inside the park with UWA rangers (USD $20 per person). You can walk among impala, zebra, and warthog in a way that is impossible in lion/elephant country. The experience is surprisingly intimate.
- Mountain biking: The only national park in Uganda where cycling is permitted on marked trails. Bikes are rentable from some lodges and the UWA camp. Cycling among impala herds on the park’s flat tracks is genuinely memorable.
- Boat trip on Lake Mburo: USD $20 per person. Departs from the Rwonyo camp jetty. Best for hippos and birding. The lake is one of the best sites in Uganda for the African finfoot, shoebill, and various kingfisher species.
- Night game drives: Available through lodges inside the park. Aardvark, porcupine, civet, and serval are the target species. Not common in most Uganda parks.
Park Entry Fees
Lake Mburo entry: USD $35 per person per day + USD $30 per vehicle per day. This makes it the most affordable of Uganda’s national parks. Payment by card (Visa/Mastercard) or mobile money at the gate. No cash payments at gates.
Where to Stay
Options inside the park range from the UWA Rwonyo Camp (bandas from USD $30 per person, campsite USD $20 per person) to Mihingo Lodge (luxury tented camp, from USD $350 per room). The mid-range option is Rwakobo Rock or Mantana Tented Camp — around USD $150–$200 per room. For a short stop-over night, the UWA banda is perfectly adequate and puts you inside the park for the early morning game drive.
