Samburu National Reserve safari self-drive — Kenya’s northern frontier reserve 350 km north of Nairobi in semi-arid bushland — is the only Kenya destination where self-drive visitors can see the five wildlife species found nowhere else in the country: the Grevy’s zebra (the world’s largest zebra, endangered), the reticulated giraffe (the most strikingly patterned giraffe species), the gerenuk (the long-necked antelope that browses standing on its hind legs), the Beisa oryx, and the Somali ostrich. No Masai Mara, Amboseli, Nakuru, or Laikipia visit produces these five species — they are Samburu’s exclusive wildlife assets. The Samburu safari self-drive is, by species uniqueness, arguably Kenya’s most rewarding single-park safari destination. This guide covers the Samburu safari self-drive for 2027/2028.
Samburu Safari Self-Drive: The Special Five
- Grevy’s zebra: World’s largest zebra — narrow stripes, large ears, white belly. Endangered — Kenya holds 90% of the global population. Seen regularly at the Ewaso Nyiro River edge in Samburu.
- Reticulated giraffe: Sharply defined geometric pattern, largest of the nine giraffe subspecies. Seen daily on the Samburu circuit, often in herds of 10–20 individuals.
- Gerenuk: The “giraffe-gazelle” — browses standing on hind legs reaching acacia foliage 2 metres high. Seen in the dry bushland north of the Ewaso Nyiro River.
- Beisa oryx: Grey-bodied antelope with dramatic straight horns, adapted to semi-arid conditions. Found in the open areas of Samburu and Buffalo Springs.
- Somali ostrich: Distinguishable from the Masai ostrich by the male’s blue-grey neck and legs. Present in Samburu’s dry-country habitat.
