The Murchison Falls self-drive north bank circuit is the heart of the park’s self-drive game drive experience — the north bank (accessed by the Paraa ferry crossing from the south bank visitor area) hosts the highest concentration of lion, giraffe, elephant, and buffalo in Murchison Falls National Park, with the tracks running west from the Paraa ferry landing across open savannah to the Nile delta game drive circuit. The Murchison Falls self-drive north bank circuit covers approximately 80 to 120km of tracks in the north bank game drive area — a full day is needed to do the north bank justice, and most self-drive visitors dedicate 2 days to Murchison Falls to cover both the north bank circuit and the Murchison Falls launch (boat trip to the falls base).

The Paraa Ferry: Timing and Cost

  • Ferry cost (2027): UGX 60,000 to 70,000 per vehicle (one-way, cash only — Uganda shillings required)
  • Ferry operating hours: First crossing approximately 7am; last crossing approximately 7pm (check current times at the Paraa visitor centre as times vary seasonally)
  • Recommended departure: Board the first morning ferry (7am) for the north bank to maximise game drive time before the heat builds. Return on the afternoon ferry (4:30pm to 5pm) to the south bank before sunset.
  • Ferry wait times: Peak season (July to August) morning ferry has vehicle queues — arrive at the ferry pier by 6:30am to secure a position on the first crossing

North Bank Game Drive Circuit

  • Karuma Plains (west of Paraa ferry landing): The main open savannah game drive area. Best for giraffe (Rothschild’s giraffe — the endangered subspecies endemic to Uganda), elephant, buffalo, and lion. Drive slowly along the Nile bank tracks — lion are frequently seen on the riverbank gravel areas.
  • Albert Nile delta (far northwest): The delta area where the Nile spreads into Lake Albert — large crocodile congregations on the sandbanks, hippo in the delta channels, and Nile lechwe (a reedbuck species found only in this area of Uganda). The delta circuit is 45 to 60km west of the Paraa ferry landing.
  • Best north bank wildlife: Lion (resident pride on the Karuma Plains), Rothschild’s giraffe, elephant herds, Cape buffalo herds numbering 200 to 500 individuals

Murchison Falls Boat Launch

The Murchison Falls boat launch (USD 35/person) departs from the Paraa south bank pier and travels 17km upriver to the base of the falls. The 2-hour boat trip passes hippo pods and Nile crocodile on the river banks. The falls base viewpoint (reached by a short trail from the boat landing) provides the closest approach to the point where the Victoria Nile forces through a 7-metre channel at enormous pressure — the most dramatic geographic feature on the East Africa self-drive circuit.
