Eastern Uganda is the least-visited quadrant of the country for safari visitors, who almost invariably head west toward Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi. But the eastern region has its own distinctive appeal: the slopes of Mount Elgon (Uganda’s second-highest mountain), the Sipi Falls waterfall complex, the dramatic granite inselberg of Tororo Rock, and the Source of the Nile at Jinja. For visitors combining Uganda with Kenya or for those seeking a route that covers Uganda’s eastern highlights, this guide covers the key eastern destinations by self-drive.

Kampala to Jinja (80 km, 1.5 hours)

The A109 east from Kampala to Jinja is good tarmac with some congestion near Mukono. Jinja (the source of the Nile and Uganda’s adventure sports capital) is the first stop — white water rafting, bungee jumping, and the source of the Nile boat trip. See the dedicated Jinja guide for full details. Most visitors spend 1–2 nights in Jinja before continuing east.

Jinja to Mbale (135 km, 2.5 hours)

Continue east on the A109 through Iganga and Tororo. The road quality is generally good tarmac. Tororo (200 km from Kampala) has a notable landmark: Tororo Rock, a dramatic granite inselberg rising 500 metres above the surrounding plain. The rock is climbable with a guide — excellent panoramic views over eastern Uganda and into Kenya. Mbale (235 km, 3.5 hours from Kampala) is the gateway town for Sipi Falls and Mount Elgon. Good fuel stations and accommodation in Mbale.

Mbale to Sipi Falls (54 km, 1.5 hours)

The road northeast from Mbale to Sipi village is tarmac for 30 km then murram for the final section. The views of Mount Elgon’s foothills emerge as you gain altitude. Sipi village (1,800 metres) has several viewpoint lodges positioned above the main falls. The coffee tour, waterfall hike, and abseiling activities are all within walking distance of most accommodation. See the Mount Elgon guide for full activity details.

Sipi Falls to Kampala or Kenya Border

Return to Kampala from Sipi via Mbale and the A109 (220 km, 3.5 hours). Alternatively, continue east to the Malaba or Busia border crossings into Kenya (Malaba border: 100 km from Mbale, 1.5 hours). The border crossings are straightforward for visitors with East Africa Tourist Visas — present passport, vehicle documents, and cross. Kenya’s western region continues east from the border with Lake Victoria on one side and the Great Rift Valley to the north.
