Kidepo Valley National Park safari self-drive — Uganda’s most remote national park, 475 km northeast of Kampala in the semi-arid Karamoja region on the border with South Sudan — delivers wildlife found nowhere else in Uganda: cheetah, Burchell’s zebra, eland, greater kudu, and Abyssinian ground hornbill. Kidepo is routinely listed in the top three African national parks by long-haul safari travellers who visit it on a Kidepo Valley safari self-drive after completing the standard west Uganda circuit at Bwindi, Kibale, and Queen Elizabeth. The park’s 1,442 km² of rolling savannah and acacia woodland receives fewer than 5,000 visitors per year — making any Kidepo Valley safari self-drive a genuinely uncrowded wilderness experience. This guide covers the Kidepo Valley safari self-drive for 2027/2028.

Kidepo Valley Safari: Wildlife Found Nowhere Else in Uganda

  • Cheetah: A resident population in the Narus Valley — the only confirmed cheetah population in Uganda. Best seen on the open Narus plains in the early morning game drive.
  • Eland: Africa’s largest antelope — herds of 20 to 80 individuals on the Kidepo Valley flats.
  • Burchell’s zebra: Absent from all other Uganda parks.
  • Greater kudu: Rocky hillside habitat in the Kidepo escarpment.
  • Ostrich: Somali ostrich seen in the semi-arid valley floor.
  • Also present: Lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, African wild dog (occasionally), 475+ bird species.

Kidepo Valley Safari Self-Drive: Vehicle and Road Requirements

The drive from Kampala to Kidepo via Gulu and Kitgum is the most demanding road in Uganda’s safari circuit. The final 130 km from Kitgum to Apoka gate is severely corrugated gravel with occasional stream crossings — a Land Cruiser V8 with high clearance and low-range 4WD is mandatory. A Toyota Prado will complete the journey but at reduced speed and with higher mechanical strain. Plan for a 9 to 10-hour drive from Kampala with overnight in Gulu or Kitgum.
