Bwindi Gorilla Trekking Sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo Compared

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest gorilla trekking operates from four separate sector briefing centres, each covering a different section of the forest and providing access to a different set of habituated gorilla families. The Bwindi gorilla trekking sectors — Buhoma in the north, Ruhija in the east, Rushaga in the south, and Nkuringo in the south-west — each have a different character in terms of trek terrain difficulty, drive time from Kampala, accommodation options, and the specific gorilla families that can be assigned. For a self-drive circuit from Kampala, the sector choice affects the driving itinerary significantly: Buhoma is the most commonly visited sector and the most accessible from Kabale, while Nkuringo is the most remote and most physically challenging, and Rushaga has the largest number of habituated families and the highest permit availability. This guide explains what each sector offers and which is the best choice for different circuit types and visitor profiles.

Buhoma Sector: Northern Bwindi, Most Accessible

The Buhoma sector is Bwindi’s most established and most visited trekking area — the first sector opened when gorilla trekking began in Bwindi in 1993, and its surrounding community has developed the most extensive tourism infrastructure of any Bwindi area. The Buhoma briefing centre is located at the northern edge of the forest, 35 km from Kabale on a murram road (1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes depending on season). From Kampala, Buhoma is accessible via the A109 to Mbarara, then the B27 to Kabale, and the Buhoma road south-west from Kabale — total Kampala to Buhoma: 9.5 to 11 hours driving. Four habituated gorilla families are currently available for trekking at Buhoma: Mubare (the original Bwindi habituated family, present since 1993), Habinyanja, Rushegura, and Katwe. The Mubare family is a particular draw for its history — it has been habituated the longest of any Bwindi family and has been observed through multiple silverback leadership transitions since the 1993 habituation. Trek terrain at Buhoma: moderate, with the forest accessible from the community boundary with less extreme elevation change than the Nkuringo or Ruhija sectors. Average trek duration: 2 to 5 hours return from the trailhead to the gorilla family. Accommodation at Buhoma: Bwindi Lodge (upmarket), Buhoma Community Rest Camp (mid-range, run by the Buhoma Development Trust), and several budget guesthouses at the community edge. The Buhoma community is the best-developed for visitor facilities — restaurants, craft shops, and the Buhoma Community Walk (a guided community tour) are available at the sector.

Ruhija Sector: Eastern Bwindi, Higher Altitude

The Ruhija sector accesses the eastern section of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest from the Ruhija plateau at 2,300 m — significantly higher than Buhoma at 1,600 m. The higher altitude means cooler temperatures (morning temperatures at Ruhija can be 8 to 12 degrees at 7 am start) and a different forest character: the Ruhija zone has more open mountain bamboo at the upper elevation and transitions to the dense equatorial forest at lower altitude where the gorilla families range. The Ruhija briefing centre is accessed from Kabale via a different road from the Buhoma approach — drive east from Kabale on the Ruhija road through Rubuguri, approximately 30 km, 1 hour. The Ruhija families: Bitukura, Oruzogo, Kyaguliro (a research group not open for standard trekking), and Mukiza. The Ruhija sector has lower visitor numbers than Buhoma and Rushaga, making it the quietest and most wilderness-feeling Bwindi trekking experience. Trek terrain at Ruhija: more challenging than Buhoma due to the altitude and the steeper descent from the plateau into the gorilla range. Average trek duration: 3 to 6 hours. Accommodation: limited options at Ruhija itself (Ruhija Gorilla Friends Camp is the main option), with Kabale hotels as the alternative base for the 1-hour drive.

Rushaga Sector: Southern Bwindi, Largest Family Choice

The Rushaga sector in Bwindi’s southern section holds the largest number of habituated gorilla families available for trekking at any single Bwindi sector — currently 6 families: Bweza, Mishaya, Busingye, Kahungye, Nshongi, and Rwigi. This means the highest permit availability per day (6 groups of 8 visitors = 48 visitors per day at Rushaga versus typically 16 to 32 at other sectors) and the greatest flexibility for last-minute permit booking when the other sectors are full. The Rushaga briefing centre is accessed from Kihihi on the Fort Portal-Kisoro road — the Kihihi to Rushaga approach road is 25 km of murram, including the Ntungwe River crossing (passable in dry season, potentially challenging in heavy rain). Total Kampala to Rushaga via Fort Portal: approximately 9 to 10 hours. The Rushaga sector is also where the Gorilla Habituation Experience is available — a full day (4 to 8 hours) with a partially habituated gorilla family at USD 1,500 per person per day, limited to 4 participants per day. This experience (available only at Rushaga in Bwindi) is the most immersive gorilla encounter possible: spending the full day with a family that is still in the process of habituation produces a different quality of encounter from the 1-hour standard trek, including following the family through feeding, resting, and social behaviour over multiple hours. Accommodation at Rushaga: Gorilla Safari Lodge, Rushaga Gorilla Camp, and Bwindi View Bandas (Uganda Wildlife Authority self-catering bandas adjacent to the briefing centre).

Nkuringo Sector: South-West Bwindi, Steepest and Most Remote

The Nkuringo sector is Bwindi’s most remote and most physically demanding trekking area. The Nkuringo briefing centre is located at 2,018 m at the southern rim of the Bwindi escarpment, and the gorilla families in this sector range in the steep forested valleys below the rim at 1,400 to 1,800 m — the trek descends steeply into the valley and then ascends back at the end, with a total elevation change of 400 to 600 metres. This makes the Nkuringo trek the most physically demanding in Bwindi, but the terrain and forest at Nkuringo are also considered by many visitors to be the most spectacular — the views from the escarpment rim across the Congo basin forests are extraordinary, and the gorilla families in the deep valley have a wilder and less frequently visited quality. Three habituated families are available at Nkuringo: Christmas, Nkuringo, and Poseidon. Access: from Kisoro (closest major town, 25 km from Nkuringo) or from Kabale via Kisoro. The Kisoro to Nkuringo road descends 600 m in 12 km on a steep, sometimes deeply rutted murram track — a V8 Land Cruiser with diff lock is strongly recommended for Nkuringo access in any season. Accommodation: Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge (luxury, on the escarpment rim with views) and Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge (mid-range).

Which Sector to Choose for Your Circuit

If this is your first gorilla trek and you want the most accessible experience: choose Buhoma. It has the most developed infrastructure, the most moderate terrain, and the most established logistics. If you want the most permit availability and the gorilla habituation experience option: choose Rushaga. If you want the quietest, most wilderness-feeling experience at a higher altitude: choose Ruhija. If you want the most dramatic terrain and the most remote sector: choose Nkuringo, with the understanding that the access road requires a V8 vehicle and the trek is physically the most demanding in Bwindi. For circuit planning, the sector choice affects the driving day: Buhoma and Ruhija are both accessed from Kabale; Rushaga is accessed from Kihihi (on the Fort Portal approach from Kampala); Nkuringo is accessed from Kisoro (further south-west, adding 2 to 3 hours to the Kampala circuit).
