Entebbe is the entry point for most international visitors to Uganda — the Entebbe International Airport handles all major international flights, and the town sits 40 km from Kampala on a Lake Victoria peninsula. If you arrive in the morning or early afternoon, the day is not wasted. Entebbe has several worthwhile activities within easy reach that allow you to start your Uganda wildlife experience before your vehicle handover and the drive to the first national park. Here is what to do on your first day.
Mabamba Bay Wetland: Shoebill Stork Before You’ve Unpacked
Mabamba Bay is 40 km west of Entebbe on a good tarmac and murram road. It is home to one of Uganda’s most consistent shoebill stork populations — accessible by dugout canoe on the papyrus swamp. This is the best shoebill site in Africa in terms of accessibility from a major city. If you land at Entebbe in the morning and have the afternoon free before your vehicle collection, Mabamba Bay is the ideal first Uganda wildlife experience.
The birding trip takes 2–3 hours by canoe with a local paddler (approximately USD $20–$30 per person). Shoebill encounter rate during the dry season exceeds 80%. Additional species on the trip: African jacana, papyrus gonolek, malachite kingfisher, pied kingfisher, African fish eagle, and the bizarre black-and-white-casqued hornbill in the forest edge. The canoe experience itself — drifting through papyrus channels at dawn or dusk — is one of Uganda’s most peaceful wildlife moments.
Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC)
The Uganda Wildlife Education Centre in Entebbe is a professionally run wildlife rehabilitation centre and zoo where confiscated and rescued animals are held in large, well-designed enclosures. It is not a substitute for seeing animals in the wild, but it serves an important function as an introduction to Uganda’s wildlife before your safari begins. You will see shoebill stork, grey crowned crane, chimpanzees, leopard, lion, various eagle species, and reptiles — all the species you are about to encounter in the wild, presented with educational context. Entry approximately USD $10 for international visitors.
Entebbe Botanical Garden
The Entebbe Botanical Garden, established in 1898 on Lake Victoria’s shore, is a 40-hectare tropical garden with tall forest canopy, a lake-edge birding trail, and the peaceful atmosphere of Uganda’s colonial-era scientific institutions. It is also famous as a filming location for the 1960s Tarzan movies — the large fig trees at the lake edge served as the jungle setting. Free entry or small nominal fee. Excellent for grey-cheeked mangabey and vervet monkeys in the canopy, black-and-white colobus, and various kingfishers on the lake shore.
Vehicle Collection in Entebbe or Kampala
Most reputable 4×4 rental companies operate from Kampala (40 km from Entebbe, 45 minutes on the expressway). Some offer airport delivery to Entebbe for early departures. If you collect in Kampala, allow 1.5–2 hours including the drive from Entebbe, handover inspection, and departure briefing. Do not attempt the first park drive on the day of your international flight arrival — jet lag and unfamiliar roads are a poor combination. Collect the vehicle, overnight in Kampala or Entebbe, and depart for the first park at 5–6am the following morning.
