Arriving at an East Africa airport after a long international flight and arranging reliable, safe ground transport to the first safari destination is one of the most logistically important moments of any East Africa trip — and one of the most anxiety-producing for first-time visitors. The major East Africa airports (Entebbe International, Nairobi JKIA, Kigali International, and Kilimanjaro International) all have an active tout/taxi sector operating outside the arrivals hall, and the distinction between a legitimate pre-booked transfer and a tout’s vehicle (no insurance, potential safety risk, possibly inflated price demanded on arrival) is not always visually obvious at the kerbside. This guide provides the practical transfer information for all four main East Africa arrival airports in 2025.

Entebbe International Airport (EBB), Uganda

Entebbe airport is 37 km from Kampala (45 minutes–2 hours depending on Kampala traffic — the worst peak-hour traffic is 07:00–09:00 and 17:00–20:00 inbound). Transfer options: pre-booked private transfer (USD $30–50 from any reputable Kampala or Entebbe hotel — book before arrival through the hotel or tour operator), taxi at the airport (the metered taxi stand inside the arrivals hall is legitimate and metered — currently USD $25–35 to Entebbe town, USD $40–55 to Kampala depending on destination). The “special hire” taxis outside the arrivals hall (touting on the kerbside) charge whatever they can negotiate — always confirm the price before getting in. For Entebbe town stays (adjacent to the airport, 5 km from most Entebbe hotels): USD $10–15. For western circuit safari departures (driving directly from the airport to Murchison Falls or QENP): arrange with a pre-booked safari vehicle to pick up at arrivals — the direct Entebbe-Murchison drive is 5–6 hours.

Nairobi JKIA and Wilson Airport, Kenya

Nairobi has two airports: Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA — all international arrivals, 18 km southeast of the city centre) and Wilson Airport (domestic and charter flights, 6 km south of the city centre — the departure point for all Safarilink and Airkenya bush flights to the Mara, Amboseli, Tsavo, and northern circuit destinations). JKIA transfers: Uber and Bolt (the rideshare apps) operate at JKIA and are significantly cheaper than the airport taxis — a Bolt from JKIA to Westlands/Karen/Gigiri (the main visitor accommodation areas) costs USD $8–15 versus USD $25–40 for the metered airport taxi. Pre-booking: all major Kenya safari operators provide airport pick-up as standard. Wilson Airport: from JKIA to Wilson Airport (for connecting bush flights), the drive is 30–45 minutes depending on traffic — always allow 2 hours between international arrival at JKIA and domestic bush flight departure from Wilson.

Kigali International Airport (KGL), Rwanda

Kigali airport is 10 km from the city centre (15–20 minutes drive). The most organised of the four East Africa airports for ground transport: the KoRide taxi app (Rwanda’s national taxi app, equivalent to Uber) operates at Kigali Airport and provides metered, pre-estimated fares — KoRide from the airport to central Kigali: RWF 6,000–8,000 (approximately USD $4.60–6.20). The metered taxi stand inside arrivals is also reliable. For Volcanoes NP transfers: the most common onward journey from Kigali — 2.5 hours to the Musanze/Kinigi area, 115 km. Pre-arranged transfer with a Rwanda tour operator: USD $60–100 one-way by private vehicle.

Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), Tanzania

  • Location: 50 km from Arusha (45 minutes), 45 km from Moshi (40 minutes)
  • Transfer to Arusha: USD $35–50 by taxi from the airport (negotiate before departure), USD $25 by shared shuttle bus (Impala Shuttle operates on schedule)
  • Transfer to Moshi (for Kilimanjaro operators): USD $30–40 by taxi
  • Note: Always arrange transfers with your Tanzania safari or trekking operator in advance — KIA is an 80-minute drive from many Arusha hotels and the cost of not pre-arranging is an overpriced kerbside negotiation at the end of a long international flight
