The Dar es Salaam to Ruaha self-drive is one of Tanzania’s longest and most rewarding overland drives — 720 kilometres from the coast through the Morogoro highlands, past the Udzungwa escarpment, and up to the Iringa plateau before the descent into the Ruaha River valley. The distance makes a single-day drive from Dar to Ruaha technically possible (10 to 11 hours of continuous driving) but impractical — an overnight at Iringa town splits the journey comfortably and positions you for a fresh 6:30am Ruaha gate entry the following morning. This guide covers the complete Dar es Salaam to Ruaha self-drive route in two-day format, the fuel stop strategy, the Iringa overnight options, and what to expect at the Ruaha Msembe gate entry.
Day 1: Dar es Salaam to Iringa (560km, 7 to 8 hours)
Dar to Morogoro (200km, 2.5 hours)
Depart Dar es Salaam from the Ubungo interchange on the A7 Morogoro highway. Traffic is heaviest in the Ubungo-Chalinze corridor (60km from Dar) — depart before 7am to clear this section before peak hours. Fill fuel at Dar before departure. The road passes through the Mikumi National Park boundary area (290km from Dar, approx. 3.5 hours) — animals are visible from the A7 highway as it passes through the park. Do not stop on the highway inside Mikumi for photographs — the A7 through Mikumi is a high-speed national highway and stopping on the carriageway is dangerous. Continue to Morogoro town (200km, 2.5 hours from Dar) — fill fuel here if low, buy provisions.
Morogoro to Iringa (360km, 4.5 to 5 hours)
Continue west from Morogoro on the A7, passing through Mikumi town (90km beyond Morogoro) and then climbing into the Udzungwa highlands. The Kilosa-Mikumi section of this drive is through a dramatic highland landscape — the road climbs from 500m to 1,700m over 150km as it ascends from the Kilombero Valley floor to the Iringa Plateau. The road quality is good tarmac throughout. Iringa town sits on the plateau at 1,635m — significantly cooler than Dar or Morogoro. The Dar es Salaam to Ruaha self-drive overnight at Iringa: multiple mid-range options available in the town centre (Iringa Hotel, Neema Crafts guesthouse) at USD 30 to 60 per double room. Fill fuel completely at Iringa before the overnight — the town’s fuel stations close early, and the Ruaha approach requires a full tank.
Day 2: Iringa to Ruaha Msembe Gate (85km, 1 to 1.5 hours) and Game Drive
Depart Iringa at 5:30am — the Msembe gate opens at 6am and an early start secures entry in the first vehicle wave for the morning game drive. The road from Iringa to the Msembe gate is 85km of murram (unpaved) — well-graded in the dry season (June to October) but can be rough and dusty. The murram section begins approximately 30km west of Iringa at the Tungamalenga junction — follow the right-hand branch signposted “Ruaha National Park.” Engage 4H before the murram begins — the road surface requires vehicle clearance and grip that 2WD driving does not provide reliably. Arrive the Msembe gate by 6:30am and process entry: USD 29 per adult, USD 40 vehicle, eCitizen pre-payment QR code accepted. The camp at Msembe (TANAPA public camp) is immediately inside the gate on the Great Ruaha River bank — the morning game drive can start directly from here.
Fuel Strategy: Dar es Salaam to Ruaha
- Dar es Salaam (departure): Fill completely (60+ litre tank)
- Morogoro (200km): Top up if below half-tank
- Mikumi town (290km): Quick top-up available at Total station roadside
- Iringa (560km): Fill completely — critical stop. This is the last fuel before Ruaha and the long return.
- No fuel inside Ruaha: Carry a minimum 20-litre jerry can filled at Iringa for the Ruaha interior game drives (internal park circuit adds 150 to 250km over 2 to 3 days)
Return: Ruaha to Dar or to Nyerere
From Ruaha, visitors can return to Dar via Iringa-Morogoro (720km, 8 to 9 hours) or continue south to Nyerere (Selous) for a Tanzania southern circuit combination. The Ruaha-Nyerere link road (south from Iringa via Kidatu toward Ifakara and the Kilosa-Mikumi-Kibiti axis) is a longer route of approximately 450km but connects the two southern circuit parks in one drive — the complete Tanzania southern self-drive. The Dar es Salaam to Ruaha self-drive as a standalone round trip covers 1,440km total (Dar-Ruaha-Dar) and is most efficiently done in a minimum of 5 nights: 2 nights in Ruaha, 1 night in Iringa, and 2 transit days.
