The Kenya to Tanzania self-drive circuit uses two main border crossings depending on the specific circuit route: Namanga (the direct Nairobi-to-Arusha connection on the A104 highway, the most frequently used Kenya-Tanzania crossing for northern circuit visitors) and Isebania/Sirare (the western border crossing connecting the Masai Mara to the Serengeti for visitors doing the combined circuit). Both crossings require the standard cross-border documentation (vehicle letter of authority, COMESA Yellow Card, both country visas), and both have efficient processing for prepared self-drive visitors — the Kenya to Tanzania border crossing experience at Namanga typically takes 30 to 60 minutes when all documents are in order.

Namanga Border Crossing: The Main Kenya-Tanzania Route

  • Location: 163km south of Nairobi on the A104 highway (Nairobi to Arusha road) — the most direct connection between Kenya’s capital and Tanzania’s safari hub
  • Processing time: 30 to 60 minutes for prepared visitors with all documents ready. Peak times (Friday afternoons, Sunday evenings, and public holidays) can extend to 2+ hours
  • Facilities at Namanga: Money changers (USD to TZS rate at Namanga is slightly worse than Arusha town — exchange minimal amounts at the border), fuel station (both sides), restaurants and food vendors in the border town
  • Kenya exit tax: No exit tax at Namanga for private vehicles
  • Tanzania entry: Tanzania tourist visa on arrival for most nationalities at Namanga (USD 50, cash only — USD bills must be post-2013 issue)

Isebania/Sirare Border: Masai Mara to Serengeti

  • Location: Western Kenya-Tanzania border, 350km southwest of Nairobi on the B3 highway via Kisii
  • Used for: The Masai Mara to Serengeti combined circuit — crossing at Isebania allows visitors to enter Tanzania in the Musoma/Mwanza area and drive south to the Serengeti via the B6 road to the Ndabaka or Fort Ikoma gates
  • Processing time: Similar to Namanga (45 to 90 minutes) — Isebania is smaller and less crowded than Namanga on most days
  • Road condition after crossing: The B6 road from Isebania toward Serengeti (via Mugumu and Ikoma) has mixed tarmac and murram sections — the final 50km to Ikoma gate is murram requiring 4WD
