Kenya’s Laikipia Plateau self-drive circuit — the high plateau (1,800 to 2,100m elevation) northwest of Mount Kenya, covering the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, and the Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT) community conservancies — is one of Kenya’s best-kept self-drive secrets. The Laikipia Plateau self-drive circuit is within 3 to 4 hours of Nairobi (via the A2 Thika highway to Nanyuki) and provides a wildlife experience that overlaps with Kenya’s national parks in some species (elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo) but includes several species absent from the south: the endangered Grevy’s zebra (the world’s largest zebra), Beisa oryx, reticulated giraffe, and African wild dog (one of the most reliable African wild dog viewing areas in East Africa is on the Laikipia Plateau, particularly in Ol Pejeta and Lewa).
Ol Pejeta Conservancy: The Self-Drive Circuit
- Location: 15km west of Nanyuki, on both sides of the Ewaso Nyiro River. Gate is 20km from Nanyuki town centre.
- Entry fee (2027): USD 85/person/day non-resident. 4WD vehicle required for the river circuit tracks — 2WD vehicles permitted on the main road only.
- Black rhino: 160+ black rhino in Ol Pejeta — the largest black rhino population in East Africa outside of South Africa. Rangers at the gate can advise on current rhino location before the game drive.
- African wild dog: Ol Pejeta’s wild dog pack (5 to 12 individuals depending on current denning season) is one of the most reliably located wild dog packs in Kenya — contact the game drive team at the gate for current wild dog location.
- The northern white rhino enclosure: Sudan’s daughters (Najin and Fatu) — the last two northern white rhinos on Earth — live in a 700-acre enclosure inside Ol Pejeta under 24-hour armed guard and are open to respectful visitor viewing.
Lewa Wildlife Conservancy: Entry for Self-Drive Visitors
- Lewa requires booking via a Lewa-affiliated accommodation — it is not an open-access conservancy for self-drive visitors without a Lewa lodge or camp booking. However, visitors staying at the Lewa Safari Camp or Il Ngwesi get full conservancy game drive access.
- Alternative: book a guided Lewa game drive through Nanyuki town operators — day visitors with a guide can access Lewa without an overnight booking.
Nanyuki: The Laikipia Self-Drive Base Town
Nanyuki (195km from Nairobi, 3 to 4 hours drive) is the provisioning, accommodation, and fuel base for the Laikipia Plateau self-drive circuit. Nanyuki has full services (supermarkets, banks, medical clinic, fuel) and a range of guesthouses at USD 25 to 80/night. The Nanyuki Market has excellent fresh produce including the plateau’s famous locally grown strawberries and carrots — the best fresh produce shopping on the Laikipia circuit.
