Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is divided into four gorilla trekking sectors — Buhoma (north), Ruhija (east), Rushaga (south), and Nkuringo (southwest) — each with its own gate, its own set of habituated gorilla families, and its own self-drive approach road. Choosing the right Bwindi sector matters significantly for self-drive visitors because the four gates are not close to each other (Buhoma to Rushaga is 50km of Bwindi perimeter road, taking 2 to 3 hours to drive), and the permit issued at booking specifies the exact sector and family. This guide covers each Bwindi gorilla trekking sector for self-drive visitors planning their Uganda circuit in 2027/2028.

Buhoma Sector (North Gate)

  • Location: Northern Bwindi, accessible via Bwindi village (Buhoma)
  • Self-drive access: From Fort Portal: 4 to 5 hours. From Kampala: 7 to 8 hours. The Buhoma approach is via Kabale or Kisoro (south) or via Fort Portal (north) — the Fort Portal approach (via Queen Elizabeth NP) is the most popular Uganda circuit route.
  • Habituated families: 5 families including the Mubare group (the longest-habituated gorilla family in Bwindi, habituated since 1991)
  • Best for: Visitors combining Bwindi with Queen Elizabeth NP (northern approach from Fort Portal); backpackers using the Buhoma community guesthouses

Rushaga Sector (South Gate)

  • Location: Southern Bwindi, near Kisoro town
  • Self-drive access: Kabale (50km, 1.5 hours) or Kisoro (25km, 45 minutes)
  • Habituated families: 6+ families — the largest number of any Bwindi sector
  • Best for: Self-drive visitors combining Bwindi with Rwanda (Volcanoes NP is 2.5 hours from Kisoro via Rwanda border crossing at Cyanika)

Ruhija Sector (East Gate)

  • Location: Eastern Bwindi, at 2,400m elevation — the highest Bwindi sector
  • Self-drive access: Kabale (40km, 1.5 hours on steep murram) — the most challenging sector road of the four
  • Habituated families: 4 families
  • Best for: Birders (highest-elevation forest in Bwindi; best Albertine Rift endemic bird diversity); visitors wanting the least-crowded sector

Nkuringo Sector (Southwest Gate)

  • Location: Southwestern Bwindi on the Congo border ridge
  • Self-drive access: Kisoro via Nteko (35km, 2 hours on steep track) — the most physically demanding trek of the four sectors (steep descent and ascent)
  • Habituated families: 2 families
  • Best for: Physically fit visitors wanting a challenging, dramatic trek; the Congo border landscape views from Nkuringo ridge are exceptional
